The town was mapped by Lieutenant Robert Kearsley RE (1798-1861), Head of the Survey Department of the Commons Enclosure & Copyhold Commission. He superintended the preparation of numerous nineteenth-century tithe maps, county maps, city maps such as this & boundary surveys. He is perhaps best known for the work Plans Of The Cities & Boroughs Of England & Wales that was published by Hansard in 1832 & for the table of conventional signs that were used on so many of his maps, as here.
