The history of the Gotthard Tunnel presented by Swisstopo, the country’s survey organizations, on extracts of three maps from 1865/1873, 1882 & 2016, plus extensive notes (English included) illustrated with drawings & photos on various aspects of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel opened on 1st June 2016. On one side are the three map extracts. The first, black & white extract from the publisher’s general map of Switzerland published in 1865/1873 at 1:250, 000 & here enlarged to 1:200, 000, shows the whole area between Altdorf & Lugano. The second extract is from the topographic survey at 1:50, 000 published in 1882 & indicates the course of the railway line, including the northern approach loops at Wassen, & the first Gotthard Tunnel between Götchenen & Ariolo. The third extract uses the current edition of Swisstopo’s general map of Switzerland at 1:200, 000 & shows the area between Altdorf & Lugano, indicating both the course of the old tunnel & the newly opened Gotthard Base Tunnel, plus the Ceneri Base Tunnel extension due for completion in 2019. The Gothard Pass area, map No. 5002, in the standard topographic survey of Switzerland at 1:50, 000 from Swisstopo, i.e. without the special overprint highlighting walking trails, local bus stops, etc, presented in Swisstopo’s hiking editions of the 50K survey. Highly regarded for their superb use of graphic relief & hill shading, the maps give an almost 3-D picture of Switzerland`s mountainous terrain. Contours are at 20m intervals. All the maps have a 1-km grid with the Swiss national coordinates. This standard version of the 50K survey covers the whole country on 78 small format sheets, with special larger format maps published for several popular tourist destinations. Topographic survey of France at 1:25, 000 in IGN`s excellent TOP25 / Série Bleue series. All the maps are GPS compatible, with a 1km UTM grid plus latitude & longitude lines at 5’ intervals. Contours are at 5m intervals except for mountainous areas where the maps have contours at 10m intervals, vividly enhanced by hill shading & graphics for rocky terrain.
