The General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO) world map shows the bathymetry of the world's ocean floor in the form of a 1.3m x 1.0m map. Bathymetric tinting shows the depths & altitude tinting is applied to the land masses. No cities are indicated, but rivers are marked (not named) & many bathymetric features are named, eg. abyssal plains, fracture zones & basins. Latitude & longitude lines are at 30 degree intervals, with margin ticks ate one degree intervals. The map is on a Mercator projection at a scale of 1:35, 000, 000 at the Equator. Below the main map are 2 stereographic projections showing the polar regions at 1:25, 000, 000. Work on the creation of the GEBCO world map began as a laboratory workshop project of the Nippon Foundation/GEBCO Training Project at the Center for Coastal & Ocean Mapping of the University of New Hampshire, USA. The bathymetry data shown on the map is based upon the GEBCO One Minute Grid, a global bathymetric grid with one arc-minute spacing, as contained within the Centenary Edition of the GEBCO Digital Atlas (published in 2003).
