On 25 April 1915, Allied forces landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in present-day Turkey to secure the sea route between Britain & France in the west & Russia in the east. After eight months of terrible fighting, they would fail... To this day, Turkey regards the victory as a defining moment in its history, a heroic last stand in the defence of the Ottoman Empire. But, counter-intuitively, it would come to signify something perhaps even greater for the defeated allies, in particular the Australians & New Zealanders: the birth of their countries` sense of nationhood. Now, in the year that marks its centenary, the Gallipoli campaign (commemorated each year on 25 April, Anzac Day), resonates with significance as the origin & symbol of Australian & New Zealand identity. As such, the facts of the campaign (which was minor when compared to the overall scale of the First World War: Australian deaths were less than a sixth of their losses on the Western Front) are often forgotten or obscured. Now the celebrated journalist & author Peter Fitz Simons, with his trademark vibrancy & expert melding of writing & research, recreates the disastrous campaign as experienced by those who endured it or perished in the attempt. ...

A century has now gone by, yet the Gallipoli campaign of 1915-16 is still infamous as arguably the most ill conceived, badly led & pointless campaign of the entire First World War. The brainchild of Winston Churchill, then First Lord of the Admiralty, following Turkey`s entry into the war on the German side, its ultimate objective was to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in western Turkey, thus allowing the Allies to take control of the eastern Mediterranean & increase pressure on the Central Powers to drain manpower from the vital Western Front. From the very beginning of the first landings, however, the campaign went awry, & countless casualties. The Allied commanders were ignorant of the terrain, & seriously underestimated the Turkish army which had been bolstered by their German allies. Thus the Allies found their campaign staled from the off & their troops hopelessly entrenched on the hillsides for long agonising months, through the burning summer & bitter winter, in appalling, dysentery-ridden conditions. By January 1916, the death toll stood at 21, 000 British troops, 11, 000 Australian & New Zeal&, & 87, 000 Turkish & the decision was made to withdraw, which in itself, ironically, was deemed to be a success. First published in 1956, when it won the inaugural Duff Cooper Prize, Alan Moorehead`s book is still regarded as the definitive work on this tragic episode of the Great War. One could argue he was the first writer to capture the true turmoil that occurred in this campaign with his colourful, analytical & compelling style of prose. Sir Max Hastings himself says in this new introduction that he was inspired as a young man by Moorehead`s books to become a reporter himself. With in-depth analysis of the campaign, the objectives both sides set themselves, & with character sketches of the main players, it brings the complex operation to life, showing how & why it went so terribly wrong & a century on, remains a by word for the loss of human life. ...

Presenting more than 150 never-before-published photographs of the campaign, many taken by the soldiers themselves, together with unpublished written material from British, Anzac, French & Turkish, including eyewitness accounts of the landings, this is an unrivalled account of what really happened at Gallipoli. Van Emden`s gripping narrative & lucid analysis of Churchill`s infamous operation, compliments Chambers`s evocative images, showing how the rapid spread of diseases like dissentry, the lack of clean water & food, the tremendous losses on both sides affected morale, until finally in January 1916, in what were the best-laid plans of the entire disastrous campaign, the Allies successfully fooled the Turkish forces & evacuated their troops from the peninsula with no additional casualties. Leading First World War historian Richard van Emden & Gallipoli expert Stephen Chambers have produced an entirely fresh, personal & illuminating study of one of the Great War`s most catastrophic events. ...
