Peter Goullart spent nine years in the all-but-forgotten Nakhi Kingdom of south west China. He had a job entirely suited to his inquiring, gossipy temperament: to get to know the local traders, merchants, inn-keepers & artisans to decide which to back with a loan from the cooperative movement. A Russian by birth, due to his extraordinary skill in language & dialects, Goullart made himself totally at home in Likiang, which had been ruled by Mandarin officials descended from ancient dynasties, & was visited by caravans of Tibetan & Burmese travelling merchants, & such mysterious local highland peoples as the Lobos. In his company we get to hear about the love affairs & social rivalries of his neighbours, to attend magnificent banquets, meet ancient dowagers & handsome warriors as well as to catch the sound of the swiftly running mountain streams, the coarse ribaldry of the market ladies & the happy laughter emerging from the wine shops. Through him we are able to travel back to this complex society, which believed simultaneously & sincerely in Buddhism, Taoism & Confucianism, in addition to their ancient Animism & Shamanism. ...

East Prussia is no longer on any map, though it was once a thriving l&, famously military, deeply forested, artistically fertile, & the birthplace of Immanuel Kant. As the scene of Stalin`s `terrible revenge` it came to embody the turbulence of the twentieth century, was carved up between Poland & the USSR after World War II -- & passed abruptly into history. Embarking on a remarkable journey through landscape & memory, Max Egremont has woven the stories of ghosts & survivors into an evocative & deeply moving meditation on identity & the passing of time. ` East Prussia`s successful evocation demands both the mind of a poet who can delineate the scale of human loss, & the imagination of an historian who knows how to count the cost. Forgotten Continent

Latin America has often been condemned to failure. Neither poor enough to evoke Africa`s moral crusade, nor as explosively booming as India and China, it has largely been overlooked by the West. Yet this vast continent, home to half a billion people, the world`s largest reserves of arable land, and 8.5 percent of global oil, is busily transforming its political and economic landscape. This book argues that rather than failing the test, Latin America`s efforts to build fairer and more prosperous societies make it one of the world`s most vigorous laboratories for capitalist democracy. In many countries, including Brazil, Chile and Mexico, democratic leaders are laying the foundations for faster economic growth and more inclusive politics, as well as tackling deep-rooted problems of
poverty, inequality, and social injustice. They face a new challenge from Hugo Chavez`s oil-fueled populism, and much is at stake. Failure will increase the flow of drugs and illegal immigrants to the United States and Europe, jeopardize stability in a region rich in oil and other strategic commodities, and threaten some of the world`s most majestic natural environments.Drawing on Michael Reid`s many years of reporting from inside Latin America`s cities, presidential palaces, and shantytowns, the book provides a vivid, immediate, and informed account of a dynamic continent and its struggle to compete in a globalized world.
