This edition of Folktales of Iraq edited by E.S. Stevens is a Dover unabridged reproduction of a classic collection originally published by Oxford University Press in 1931. Iraqi oral traditions encompass a tremendous variety of folktales, from fables & heroic myths to ones rooted in age-old sagas, tribal customs & religion, & the stories here teem not only with the local speciality of the jann (fairy-folk who don the appearance of birds at will) but with the demons, witches, ogres & other supernatural creatures who populate such tales all over the world. In the case of Iraq, however, Sumerians, Chaldaeans, Cassites, Assyrians, Persians, Arabs, & Turks have all crossed the region at various times, along with merchant caravans, pilgrims, gypsies & other travelers. Each of these successive waves of migration, conquest & settlement have contributed fresh elements to the native folklore, infusing ancient Mesopotamia's traditional tales with vigorous new life. As the first English-language collection of Iraqi fairy tales, this book dates from between the world wars, when traditional storytelling seemed threatened by the advent of the cinema & gramophone. These stories are recounted as they were told ...

This book defines what a folly is & shows that these architectural curiosities are to be found all over Britain. Some are on hilltops or in remote places, while others, almost unnoticed, stand beside the roadside. Many follies were built in the eighteenth century when great landowners, after their Grand Tour of Europe, returned to their estates with visions of putting up romantic ruins to satisfy a yearning for the past. The history of follies is traced, from the first prospect tower, through the golden era of the first half of the eighteenth century & up to the Second World War. The numerous illustrations demonstrate the enormous variety of follies that can still be found throughout Britain. ...

`I can`t remember reading a book where the author is continually making fun of himself yet becomes more & more admirable & likeable as the book goes on. He has created a cast of interesting & entertaining characters that are vivid, memorable, & a pleasure to hang out with. The book is an unexpected delight`
