Fly Away, Pigeon tells the heart-wrenching story of a family torn between emigration & immigration & paints evocative portraits of the former Yugoslavia & modern-day Switzerl&. In this novel, Melinda Nadj Abonji interweaves two narrative strands, recounting the history of three generations of the Kocsis family & chronicling their hard-won assimilation. Originally part of Serbia`s Hungarian-speaking minority in the Vojvodina, the Kocsis family immigrates to Switzerland in the early 1970s when their hometown is still part of the Yugoslav republic. Parents Miklos & Rosza land in Switzerland knowing just one word-”work.” & after three years of backbreaking, menial work, both legal & illegal, they are finally able to obtain visas for their two young daughters, Ildiko & Nomi, who safely join them. However, for all their efforts to adapt & assimilate they still must endure insults & prejudice from members of their new community & helplessly stand by as the friends & family members they left behind suffer the maelstrom of the Balkan War. With tough-minded nostalgia & compassionate realism, Fly Away, Pigeon illustrates how much pain & loss even the most successful immigrant stories contain. It is a work that is intensely local, while grounded in the histories & cultures of two distinctive communities. Its emotions & struggles are as universal as the human dilemmas it portrays. ...

It all goes back to childhood memories. Grown men buying sailboats, old-timer cars, & old biplanes. Guided & inspired by adventure books they read when they were boys. My preferred literature was definitely exploration, with pirates a close second. Well-read was a book about an uncle with many cousins. He owned several DC-3s & traveled through Africa taking his kin for rides. Rich adventure. & of course I saw myself as the pilot. My first actual flight was as a passenger in a DC-3, fourth class. I believe it was the late 1950s. My Dad dropped me off at the Dakota's foldout stairs, made sure it took off, & then boarded a Constellation to New York. I overlooked the wing of the DC-3 during flight & remember praying the rivets would hold till London. If we do not have this item in stock we will order it for you from our supplier. Flying Carpet

`I`ve just given myself an airplane and I want you to fly us to all the outlandish places in the world, Turkey, Persia, Paris and - Pasadena. We`re going to fly across deserts, over mountains, rescue imprisoned princesses and fight dragons. We must have the world. We can have the world!` Thirsting for a new adventure and announcing that `an adventure not in the air is obsolete`, Richard Halliburton hired pioneer aviator Moye Stephens in 1931 and fearlessly set out to circle the world in an open cockpit biplane optimistically named The Flying Carpet. For Halliburton it was the ultimate in romantic, risky exploration and was a means of seeing the world in a way that few had ever seen it before. True to form, his journey was breathtakingly audacious. They performed aerobatics in Fez,
landed in mysterious Timbuktu, spent time with the French Foreign Legion in Algeria and explored Cairo, Damascus and Petra. In Iran, they met legendary aviatrix Ella Beinhorn and gave Princess Mahin Banu a ride. In Iraq, it was the turn of King Faisal`s young son, Ghazi, who was escorted by two RAF fighter planes. In India, they flew over the Taj Mahal - upside down - and, soaring over the Himalayas, Halliburton took the first aerial photograph of Everest. In Borneo they were entertained by Sylvia Brooke, the `White Queen of Borneo`, and by the chief of the Iban Dyak headhunters, who gave them dozens of shrunken heads. A journey as dazzling as Halliburton himself and, with the world at war less than a decade later, marking the end of an era, the story of The Flying Carpet is
as captivating today as it was to the world 80 years ago.
