Flood is a devastating & compulsive thriller that reads like fact. The country has suffered floods on an unprecedented scale in recent years, but have we seen the worst, an inundation that threatens millions of lives? Doyle`s vision is incontestable, backed up by over twenty-five years of research. Flood is the disaster novel of today. A storm rages over the north of Britain, a troop carrier founders in the Irish Sea, flood indicators go off the scale, the seas are mountainous & a spring tide is about to strike the East Coast. Air sea rescue & military personnel struggle to save lives all down the coast. The worse is yet to come. When the storm reaches the south the two forces of wind & tide will combine & send a huge one-in-a-thousand tidal surge up the Thames. But surely London is safe: the Thames Barrier will save the capital from disaster as it was intended to do? The river is a titanic presence by now, higher than anyone has known it, & the surge thunders towards the Barrier. Scientists begin to talk of the possibility of overtopping. Can fifty feet high gates be overwhelmed by a wave? Then there is an explosion the size of a small Hiroshima: a supertanker is ablaze in the estuary & most of the Essex petrochemical works are going up with it. The Thames catches fire & the wall of fire & water thunders towards Britain`s capital. This is the story of what happens next, & the desperate attempts to save the capital from destruction. ...

`26.6.2008. 9.00 hours. Cloud level has risen sufficiently to see the heights of the island of Hoy. The margin of existence that I had noticed in North Ronaldsay, with its apparent make do approach to the problem of sea encroachment, is displayed along much of the island`s coastline. As I walk along the shores of the Hoy sound I come to a patchwork of sandbags that have been placed within the fragmenting sandstone of the upper shore. Close by these sea defences an old stone wall encloses a cemetery. Many of the headstones are inscribed with readings of latitude & longitude, indicating that the buried were probably mariners. High & dry upon the shores of the sound, the seamen rest: the sea had taken them & in the fullness of time it will claim them back.` As climate change & the prospect of relentlessly rising sea levels threaten communities around the world, artist & writer John Kelly records this process in words & images. From the high altiplano of Bolivia, through Newfoundl&, the Arctic regions of Alaska & Svalbard, to the Baltic & Orkney, he evokes the dramatic natural transformations affecting our planet & their impact on people & landscapes. ...

The book considers the importance of plants in Tolkien`s conception of Middle-earth. It develops the theme that Middle-earth is our own world
- & will awaken the reader to the connection between the plants of Tolkien`s legendarium & those growing in our gardens & local natural areas of the Northern Hemisphere. It also demonstrates the connection between the various plant communities of Middle-earth & the elven & human cultures that occupy them, including those environments degraded by warfare, industrialization or pollution. The heart of the book is an alphabetical listing, arranged by common names, of all of the plants mentioned in Tolkien`s legendarium; for each of these plants the treatment will include: 1) common & scientific name, along with an indication of the family to which the plant belongs, 2) a brief"e from one of Tolkien`s works in which the plant is referenced, 3) a discussion of the significance of the plant in the context of Tolkien`s legendarium, 4) the etymology relating to both English common name & the scientific name, & where relevant, the name in one or more of the languages of Middle-earth, 5) a brief statement of the plant`s distribution & ecology (along with mention of major species), 6) economic uses, both traditional & current, & 7) an easy-to-understand description of the plant. The book provides guidelines to the use of plant descriptions, & the few technical terms used are carefully defined. Many plants are illustrated by original artwork, in the style of a woodcut print, & most are also represented by one to several photographs (showing their diagnostic characteristics). The description along with an identification key, when used with the illustrations & photos, allow easy identification of each plant, adding to the reader`s understanding & appreciation of Tolkien`s works. A glossary of descriptive terms is also included.

Floodmarkers

Lystra, North Carolina. A fictional town full of very real people who survive the attack of Hurricane Hugo and then find their bearings in the aftermath--often in wild and hilarious ways. The days leading up to the impending disaster are not at all unusual--no portents of disaster, no signs of impending calamity. Bryce works his night shift at the hot dog factory, Isaac drives the bus to school, Evelyn attends a funeral. But when the electricity fails in the middle of the night on September 21, 1989, it marks the moment when everything will change: Hugo has arrived. The storm builds, the wind whips by faster and faster, and interpersonal dramas, grudges, and rivalries are dredged up along with the flotsam and debris. Meanwhile, a small bridge over Buffalo Creek has its own story
to tell. Floodmarkers, painted red, track the height of the water from past rainstorms, and as the creek level rises higher than ever before, so do the emotions of the townspeople. Floodmarkers is an exquisitely crafted day-in-the-life of a town. And as Nic Brown has us look bravely at the eye of the storm, he cleverly shows us that human nature can stir up a spectacular tempest all its own.
