This is one man`s journey, swimming across Britain`s countryside & immersing in the sometimes icy waters while coming to terms with something more challenging than the choppy waters of the English Channel. As Joe Minihane comes up for air, he discovers that swimming is both a joyous activity & a voyage into oneself. Minihane became obsessed with wild swimming & its restorative qualities, developing a new-found passion by following the example of naturalist Roger Deakin in his classic Waterlog. While fighting the currents, sometimes treading water, Minihane begins to confront the buried issues in his life. Along the way, he rekindles old friendships & forges new ones, & after an unexpected setback discovers that he has already gained enough strength to continue his recovery on dry l&. Both strange & beautiful, the wild water puts him in touch with nature & himself. Floating is a remarkable memoir about a passion for swimming & nature. Moving from darkness into light, it is as intense & moving as it is lyrical & generous. It captures in memorable detail Minihane`s struggle to understand his life, to move forward &, steeped in the anti-authoritarian & naturalistic spirit of Deakin, celebrates the joy of taking time to enjoy life. From Hampstead to Yorkshire, & Dorset to Jura, from the Isles of Scilly to Wales, Minihane has written a love letter to wild stretches of water. We swim with him through ponds & lakes, rivers & canals, lodes & marshes, even the ice-cold sea & come out of the water healthier. Review: Lovely, lively, passionate... a celebration of nature`s ability to inspire healing & joy` -- Robert Mac Farlane, author of Landmarks `I love this book... this has to sit next to Waterlog in every swimmer`s library` -- Jenny Landreth, author of Swell: A Waterbiography ` Minihane writes with a compulsive honesty & clarity that draws you into its stream as beguiling as any river Deakin ever swam
- a wonderful read. Highly recommended!` -- Kate Rew founder of the Outdoor Swimming Society `A wonderful book: a love letter to wild swimming, a hate letter to anxiety & a story of how we can learn to live with ourselves, our overclocked minds, even after we climb out of the water` -- Joe Dunthorne, author of Submarine

” Water has always had the magical power to cure...” writes Roger Deakin in his bestseller Waterlog. This reasoning served as the inspiration for Minihane to take his new obsession with wild swimming to greater heights, with the goal of swimming in every river, lake, lido & bay which Deakin visited on his own trip in the mid-1990s. But beyond his plans to use the journey as a means to see & experience the UK`s most scenic locations, it was also a way of soothing his troubled mind & finding a path back to happiness after finally admitting he had a problem with anxiety. Floating is the story of Joe Minihane`s attempt to retrace the greatest swimming exploration of our time while facing up to his struggles with anxiety by diving right in. A very different book from Deakin`s Waterlog, this is a journey of overcoming emotional & psychological problems with swimming as the medium for recovery. But when Minihane`s endeavour is brought to an unexpected halt & he is unable to escape his anxieties in the water, he must discover the means to face them head-on. Turning to professional help & relying on the support of a growing band of swimming fanatics, he learns why his persistent worrying has developed into crippling anxiety & develops the tools to overcome it. While Floating may bring readers back years later to Deakin`s spectacular swimming spots, Minihane`s wonderful book is about more: coming to the understanding that in life, as in swimming, we sometimes need to let the current lead us & learn how to float in choppy waters. ...

Flood is a devastating & compulsive thriller that reads like fact. The country has suffered floods on an unprecedented scale in recent years, but have we seen the worst, an inundation that threatens millions of lives? Doyle`s vision is incontestable, backed up by over twenty-five years of research. Flood is the disaster novel of today. A storm rages over the north of Britain, a troop carrier founders in the Irish Sea, flood indicators go off the scale, the seas are mountainous & a spring tide is about to strike the East Coast. Air sea rescue & military personnel struggle to save lives all down the coast. The worse is yet to come. When the storm reaches the south the two forces of wind & tide will combine & send a huge one-in-a-thousand tidal surge up the Thames. But surely London is safe: the Thames Barrier will save the capital from disaster as it was intended to do? The river is a titanic presence by now, higher than anyone has known it, & the surge thunders towards the Barrier. Scientists begin to talk of the possibility of overtopping. Can fifty feet high gates be overwhelmed by a wave? Then there is an explosion the size of a small Hiroshima: a supertanker is ablaze in the estuary & most of the Essex petrochemical works are going up with it. The Thames catches fire & the wall of fire & water thunders towards Britain`s capital. This is the story of what happens next, & the desperate attempts to save the capital from destruction. ...

`26.6.2008. 9.00 hours. Cloud level has risen sufficiently to see the heights of the island of Hoy. The margin of existence that I had noticed in North Ronaldsay, with its apparent make do approach to the problem of sea encroachment, is displayed along much of the island`s coastline. As I walk along the shores of the Hoy sound I come to a patchwork of sandbags that have been placed within the fragmenting sandstone of the upper shore. Close by these sea defences an old stone wall encloses a cemetery. Many of the headstones are inscribed with readings of latitude & longitude, indicating that the buried were probably mariners. High & dry upon the shores of the sound, the seamen rest: the sea had taken them & in the fullness of time it will claim them back.` As climate change & the prospect of relentlessly rising sea levels threaten communities around the world, artist & writer John Kelly records this process in words & images. From the high altiplano of Bolivia, through Newfoundl&, the Arctic regions of Alaska & Svalbard, to the Baltic & Orkney, he evokes the dramatic natural transformations affecting our planet & their impact on people & landscapes. ...
