This delightfully playful history uses 36 of our most expressive, quirky, beautiful & sometimes baffling stamps to tell us the story of Britain, through Dickens & the potato famine to Thatcher & punk. Stamps tell a story. Since the Penny Black first burst on the scene in 1840, they have made & mirrored history as it happens
- from the ` British Empire Exhibition` of 1924 to the Austerity Olympics of 1948, from the Coronation to the death of Diana, from the advent of computers to the new Millennium. Chris West is a stamp-obsessive. He has picked his favourites to tell hugely entertaining & idiosyncratic history. We learn about the Penny Lilac which united a nation in 1881; the controversial schoolboy-designed Edward VIII stamp of 1936; the day the Queen`s head was nearly chopped off in 1966; the first non-white Briton to grace a stamp in 1982, & many more. Each lovingly-designed stamp is a vintage specimen & a tantalising window onto an era.

” The First Crusade” is one of the best-known & most written-about events in history but in this new book Dr Peter Frankopan asks vital questions that have never been posed before. This is the only book to address the history of the ” First Crusade” from the perspective of the east, examining the role of the Byzantine Empire & its ruler, Emperor Alexios I Komnenos. Peter Frankopan`s focus on the imperial city of Constantinople & events in Asia Minor is the result of a major reinterpretation of eastern sources which reveal the crucial role of Byzantium in the ” Genesis” & execution of the ” First Crusade”. Frankopan`s revelation of a close cooperation between the pope in Rome & the emperor in Constantinople constitutes an important revision & brand new evidence of the history of the Church. This book questions the traditional view that the Catholic & Orthodox churches had broken definitively in 1054. Rather than viewing the Crusades as a conflict between Christianity & Islam, the book reveals a complex triangular relationship between the west, Byzantium & the Muslim world. So, ” The First Crusade” constitutes a paradigm shift
- it radically re-shapes our understanding of the aims, expectations, & long-term implications of the ” First Crusade” & the Crusades as a whole. Most importantly it answers why was there a ” First Crusade”?

Includes::
high drama & grand adventure & interesting personalities. Four planes started out, each named for an American city (Boston, Chicago, New Orleans, & Seattle), & carried a pilot & a mechanic. Only two planes survived the entire trip, though no crew members were lost. America was not alone in its endeavor to be the first: Great Britain, France, Italy, Portugal, & Argentina were desperately trying to beat the American crew. The Chicago is in the national collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. where it is on display at the National Air & Space Museum. The New Orleans belongs to the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, though currently on loan to the Museum of Flying in Santa Monica, California. First Contact

A story of old-fashioned adventure driven purely by curiosity and a refusal to believe that everything has been done.This is a true story of modern day exploration and the discovery of cannibal tribes in the 21st century. It will appeal to anthropologists as much as it will to adventurers and those with a thirst for excitement and humour. From the very start the team found far more hurdles than those just the jungle could throw at them. In the course of their 150-mile journey by dugout canoe and foot through the largest swamp on Earth they dodged police, encountered politically disgruntled ex head-hunters and were pursued by a previously undiscovered clan of the little known Korowai tribe. This was all before they had begun their arduous journey into the mountainous interior of the island
and the previously unclimbed south face of Gunung Mandala, the reason for their expedition. An expedition far more extraordinary than they had ever imagined, one that would stretch them, their friendship and their equipment to the limits.
