It is the most persistent myth of our time: religion is the cause of all violence. But history suggests otherwise. Karen Armstrong, former Roman Catholic nun & one of our foremost scholars of religion, speaks out to disprove the link between religion & bloodshed. Religion is as old as humanity: Fields of Blood goes back to the Stone Age hunter
- gatherers & traces religion through the centuries, from medieval crusaders to modern-day jihadists; The West today has a warped concept of religion: we regard faith as a personal & private matter, but for most of history faith has informed people`s entire outlook on life, & often been inseparable from politics; humans undoubtedly have a natural propensity for aggression: the founders of the largest religions
- Jesus, Buddha, the rabbis of early Judaism, the prophet Muhammad
- aimed to curb violence & build a more peaceful & just society, but with our growing greed for money & wealth came collective violence & warfare; with the arrival of the modern all-powerful, secular state humanity`s destructive potential has begun to spiral out of control. Is humanity on the brink of destroying itself? Fields of Blood is a celebration of the ancient religious ideas & movements that have promoted peace & reconciliation across millennia of civilization.

Mexico has a vast range of festivals, several commemorating national events but mostly religious or spiritual in inspiration. After the Spanish Conquest of 1521, Roman Catholic teachings fused with the beliefs of native civilizations, & even today the popular arts & crafts draw upon the Church as a rich source of imagery. Fiestas are often lavish & extremely costly. With extensive preparations, they commemorate local saints days & religious holidays such as Christmas, Carnival & Holy Week. Many festivals are dominated by masked dances, & the Devil, Death, angels & the Deadly Sins still do battle at fiesta time in countless village squares. During the Days of the Dead (All Saints & All Souls days, 1st & 2nd November), the deceased are thought to visit friends & relatives on earth. Families welcome the returning souls with flowers, incense, candles & feasting. On 12th December, Mexicans everywhere honour Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico & an important symbol of national identity. Drawing on her extensive travels in Mexico & the collections she has helped create in the British Museum, Chloe Sayer provides a living context to show what makes these festivities so attractive & also uniquely Mexican. ...
