Map No. 3112ET, Fôret de Verdun et du Mort-Homme, in IGN’s excellent, detailed topographic survey of France at 1:25, 000. With the town of Verdun at its southern edge, the map covers the area of the battle of Verdun between the German & the French forces from February to December 1916. Notes in French, English & German provide a brief history of this 9 months, 3 weeks & 6 days long battle. Current edition was published in February 2016 to coincide with the 100 anniversary of the battle. Although not specifically designed to show WWI memorial sites & best used in conjunctions with one of the specialist maps of the Western Front, maps in the IGN 1:25, 000 series are ideal for locating access to the small war cemeteries & other WWI memorials. Each map covers an area of 62x 45 kilometres (39 x 28 miles approx.), with a 2-km overlap between the sheets. The maps have contours at 20m intervals (10m glacier contours), plus colouring & graphics to show cultivated areas, bogs, forests, etc. In addition to all the information expected of topographic mapping at this scale the maps distinguish between waymarked & unmarked footpaths & show campsites, tourist huts (serviced/self service/no supplies), country hotels & restaurants, & illuminated ski trails.
