Bestselling author Simon Winchester writes a magnificent history of the pioneering engineers who developed precision machinery to allow us to see as far as the moon & as close as the Higgs boson. Precision is the key to everything. It is an integral, unchallenged & essential component of our modern social, mercantile, scientific, mechanical & intellectual landscapes. The items we value in our daily lives
- a camera, phone, computer, bicycle, car, a dishwasher perhaps
- all sport components that fit together with precision & operate with near perfection. We also assume that the more precise a device the better it is. & yet whilst we live lives peppered & larded with precision, we are not, when we come to think about it, entirely sure what precision is, or what it means. How & when did it begin to build the modern world? Simon Winchester seeks to answer these questions through stories of precision`s pioneers. Exactly takes us back to the origins of the Industrial Age, to Britain where he introduces the scientific minds that helped usher in modern production: John ` Iron-Mad` Wilkinson, Henry Maudslay, Joseph Bramah, Jesse Ramsden, & Joseph Whitworth. Thomas Jefferson exported their discoveries to the United States as manufacturing developed in the early twentieth century, with Britain`s Henry Royce developing the Rolls Royce & Henry Ford mass producing cars, Hattori`s Seiko & Leica lenses, to today`s cutting-edge developments from Europe, Asia & North America. As he introduces the minds & methods that have changed the modern world, Winchester explores fundamental questions. Why is precision important? What are the different tools we use to measure it? Who has invented & perfected it? Has the pursuit of the ultra-precise in so many facets of human life blinded us to other things of equal value, such as an appreciation for the age-old traditions of craftsmanship, art, & high culture? Are we missing something that reflects the world as it is, rather than the world as we think we would wish it to be? & can the precise & the natural co-exist in society?

` From the point of view of the nation, it`s a good thing that he died.` Great Barwick`s least popular man is murdered on a train. Twelve jurors sit in court. Four suspects are identified
- but which of them is on trial? This novel has all the makings of a classic murder mystery, but with a twist: as Attorney-General Anstruther Blayton leads the court through prosecution & defence, Inspector Fenby carries out his investigation. All this occurs while the identity of the figure in the dock is kept tantalisingly out of reach. Excellent Intentions is a classic crime novel laced with irreverent wit, first published in 1939.

Mildred Lathbury is one of those `excellent women` who is often taken for granted. She is a godsend, `capable of dealing with most of the stock situations of life
- birth, marriage, death, the successful jumble sales, the garden fete spoilt by bad weather`. As such, she often gets herself embroiled in other people`s lives
- especially those of her glamorous new neighbours, the Napiers, whose marriage seems to be on the rocks. One cannot take sides in these matters, though it is tricky, especially as Mildred, teetering on the edge of spinsterhood, has a soft spot for dashing young Rockingham Napier. This is Barbara Pym`s world at its funniest & most touching.

Even more popular in their day than Don Quixote, Cervantes`s Exemplary Stories (1613) surprise, challenge & delight. Ranging from the picaresque to the satirical, Cervantes`s Exemplary Stories defy the conventions of heroic chivalric literature through a combination of comic irony, moral ambiguity, realism, & sheer mirth. With acute narrative skill & deft characterisation, drawing on colloquial language & farce, Cervantes creates a tension between the everyday & the literary, the plausible & the improbable. While encouraging us to reach our own moral conclusions, he also persuades us to accept the coincidental & the incredible: two boys indulge their life of crime at a time of public prayer; a young nobleman undergoes a change of identity at the behest of not a princess but a mere gipsy girl, &, most fantastically, talking dogs philosophize in a ward full of syphilitics. By placing the extraordinary within the contexts of the ordinary, the Exemplary Stories chart new novelistic territory & demonstrate Cervantes at his most imaginative & innovative. This new translation captures the full vigour of Cervantes`s wit & makes available two rarely printed tales, ` The Illustrious Kitchen Maid` & ` The Power of Blood`. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World`s Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford`s commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, & much more. ...
