E.F. (` Teddy`) Norton was a member of the 1922 Everest expedition & the leader of the 1924 expedition. Generally considered to be one of the finest climbers of his generation, in 1924 he reached a height of 28, 126ft without oxygen, a record that stood for fifty-four years. A few days later, Norton`s fellow climbers Mallory & Irvine disappeared high on the mountain, a mystery that has fascinated subsequent generations & remains a topic of fierce debate today. The qualities of leadership which Norton showed that year in the face of appalling trials have led to him being regarded as one of the greatest of all Everest expedition leaders. His official account of the expedition has since become a classic. Norton`s private diaries & sketches, published here for the first time, give a vivid impression of the joys & trials of the early Everest expeditions. They also record the landscapes, wildlife, flowers & people encountered en route, & provide a glimpse of the lost world of pre-war Tibet in colour. ...

The May 1996 climbing season on Mount Everest will go down in infamy. Its story has been recounted in David Breashears`s gripping IMAX film, Jon Krakauer`s bestseller Into Thin Air, & this NG film companion book, now updated with brilliant new panoramic photography. Written in suspenseful detail, the book documents how a courageous photographic team, facing hazards of their own, became an essential part of a rescue effort that brought some--but not all--of their companions down from the mountain alive. Added to the classic main text are fascinating updates: brief portraits of those who lived through the tragedy; a time line of subsequent climbing events on Everest, up to 2014; & never-before-published detailed panoramics of Everest & the Himalaya. The new feature film, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Keira Knightley, & Robin Wright, presents the opportunity to refresh, update, & reintroduce one of National Geographic`s most successful titles. ...

This is the 2013 special anniversary edition to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Everest via the West Ridge which remains the least attempted & most deadly of recognised routes on Everest. In 1963, Jim Whittaker became the first American to summit Everest via the South Col route. Roughly two weeks after Whittaker`s achievement, Tom Hornbein & Willi Unsoeld, fellow American mountaineers on the same expedition, became the first climbers ever to summit the world`s highest peak via the dangerous & forbidding West Ridge
- a route on which only a handful of climbers have since succeeded. This special 50th anniversary edition reintroduces the adventure in a larger format with full-colour photographs by members of the expedition, including leader Norman G. Dyhrenfurth & team doctor Jim Lester. In addition to a new foreword by Jon Krakauer, this volume also features a new preface by Hornbein along with a series of prefaces he wrote for earlier editions, including the original from 1965, & a map by Dee Molenaar. Updated bios of all the American Mount Everest Expedition team members, written by climber Broughton Coburn, are now accompanied by contemporary portraits from the expedition.
