John Gay was one of the most respected photographers of the mid-20th century but, unlike that of some of his contemporaries, his work is now largely overlooked. This important book, which

Includes::
300 evocative photographs from the large collection of his work held by the National Monuments Record, marks the centenary of his birth in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1909 & coincides with two major exhibitions of his work being held in London. Gay's work is wide ranging yet returns to a number of key themes
- animals & children, informal shots of ordinary people, rural life, modern architecture & London, especially his beloved Highgate & Hampstead, & characteristically uses light & shade to great effect. The insignificant object held a strong fascination for him & his gift for being unobtrusive imbues many of his images with a unique poignancy.

To see England properly, I recommend viewing it from the saddle..` A.F Tschiffely. Travelling through Engl&, & doing it on horseback, is to rediscover both the romance of the countryside & man`s relationship with both his environment & his horse. With twelve carefully crafted rides to choose from, from Dorset in the south west to Yorkshire in the north east, this specially photographed book will transport you back to a time before cars & tarmac roads, when life was simpler & slower. Escape down tracks that are carefully catalogued in the Domesday book, or past Thomas Hardy`s cottage & great stately houses, through Cotswolds villages & along beaches. Each ride contains a comprehensive map detailed the route & telling you how long it will take, places to stay (that welcome horses), essential kit to take with you & places of interest to visit along the way. In short, an inspirational guide book for the enterprising (or armchair) traveller. ...

` England is a family in which the young are generally thwarted & most of the power is in the hands of irresponsible uncles & bedridden aunts. Still, it is a family.` England Your England` is one of the most compelling & insightful portraits of the nation ever written. Shot through with Orwell`s deeply felt sense of patriotism & love for his homel&, the essay is at the same time unfailingly clear-eyed about the nation`s failings: entrenched social inequality, a dishonest press & a class system that only works for those at the top. Written during the Second World War, as the bombs were falling on Engl&, the essay today speaks to the nation`s current moment of crisis just as urgently as it did in Orwell`s own time. It is a crucial read for anyone who wants to understand who we are, & where we`ve come from. ...
