` England is a family in which the young are generally thwarted & most of the power is in the hands of irresponsible uncles & bedridden aunts. Still, it is a family.` England Your England` is one of the most compelling & insightful portraits of the nation ever written. Shot through with Orwell`s deeply felt sense of patriotism & love for his homel&, the essay is at the same time unfailingly clear-eyed about the nation`s failings: entrenched social inequality, a dishonest press & a class system that only works for those at the top. Written during the Second World War, as the bombs were falling on Engl&, the essay today speaks to the nation`s current moment of crisis just as urgently as it did in Orwell`s own time. It is a crucial read for anyone who wants to understand who we are, & where we`ve come from. ...

Originally Published as a Shell guide this widely praised guide to the pick of England's churches is now expanded & republished as one of Aurum's popular Daily Telegraph guides. Out of the thousands of churches in Engl&, Robert Harbison has selected just over 550, chosen as often for their simplicity & the beauty of their settings as for architectural grandeur, or the quality of their stained glass, stonework of monuments. They range from the magnificent wool churches at Blythburgh, Lavenham & Long Melford in East Anglia to the rustic simplicity of the little church at the head of Wastwater in Cumbria. All are described by the author with an infectious enthusiasm a learning that is lightly worn. There is an introductory survey of historical styles in church architecture & appendices listing the churches that are notable for particular features, such as wal paintings or fonts, & a comprehensive glossary of architectural terms. ...

A special edition of Engl&, Their England by A. G. Macdonell reissued with a bright retro design to celebrate Pan`s 70th anniversary. Banished from his native Scotland by a curious clause in his father`s will, Donald Cameron moves to London & decides to conduct a study of the English people; a strange race who, he is told, have built an entire national identity around a reverence for team spirit & the memory of Lord Nelson... What follows is one of the funniest social satires ever written. Whether Cameron is haplessly participating in a village cricket match, being shown around an exclusive golf course, or trying to watch a rugby match in the thick London fog, his affectionately bemused portrait of his new countrymen is a joy to read. Reminiscent of the gentle wit of P. G. Wodehouse & Jerome K. Jerome, Engl&, Their England offers a delightful portrait of Britain in the 1920s. ...

A beautiful reproduction by the British Geological Survey of William Smith’s famous 1815 geological map of England & Wales, with the combination of superb hand colouring & old-fashioned cartography providing a really stunning effect. The map, to give it its full, impressive title: “A delineation of the strata of England & Wales, with part of Scotland; exhibiting the collieries & mines, the marches & fen lands originally overflowed by the sea, & the varieties of soil according to the variations in the substrata, illustrated by the most descriptive names by W. Smith”, extends north beyond the Firth of Forth & the Clyde to Dundee. The base map has plenty of names of towns, villages & various topographic features, & shows the network of rivers & canals as well as roads. Symbols indicate locations of collieries, lead/copper/tin mines, & salt or aluminium works. The original map was printed in 15 parts at a scale of 1” to five miles, & if combined would have measured eight feet high by six feet wide. It is reproduced here at Approx. half its original scale.PLEASE NOTE: due to the reduction in scale names of many locations are in a very small print size, although clearly legible with a magnifying glass. ...

From the White Cliffs of Dover to MG Rover, from Newcastle Brown Ale to Royal Mail, & from John Milton to blue stilton, Nicholas Hobbes explains & celebrates every aspect of Englishness for a modern audience. The result is as entertaining as it is essential. ...

England, England

Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize for Fiction. As every schoolboy knows, you can fit the whole of England on the Isle of White. Grotesque, visionary tycoon Sir Jack Pitman takes the saying literally and does exactly that. He constructs on the island `The Project`, a vast heritage centre containing everything `English`, from Big Ben to Stonehenge, from Manchester United to the white cliffs of Dover. The project is monstrous, risky, and vastly successful. In fact, it gradually begins to rival `Old` England and even threatens to supersede it...One of Barnes`s finest and funniest novels, England, England calls into question the idea of replicas, truth vs fiction, reality vs art, nationhood, myth-making, and self-exploration.
