The map covers the northern part of the city including the Hoesch Works & Hansa Mine & extends northward to Brambauer. Includes:: Bochum, Cologne, Dortmund, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Oberhausen & other towns, with their great network of railways & industries. The maps are taken from the British War Office 1:12, 500 plans & reduced at Approx. 1:19, 000. Published in 1945, prior to the Allied occupation of the area, the maps are especially good at showing industry, collieries & transport. They are not bombing maps
- indeed, they make clear that allowance is not made for bomb damage
- but show the areas with all their industrial sites & railways largely as they were before the bombing raids of 1943-44. The maps have additional information added by British intelligence. This is normally accurate but allowance must be made for the `fog of war` & occasional spelling mistakes, etc. Each title has on the reverse a specially written introduction to the area in English, with a shorter text in German. The maps have contours at 20m intervals, enhanced by relief shading, plus colouring and/or graphics to show different types of terrain, vegetation or land use. Boundaries of national parks & other protected areas are marked. In addition to all the usual information featured on topographic mapping at this scale, detailed presentation of the road & rail networks, rural tracks & paths, etc, the maps also show campsites & mountain refuges. On more recent editions some GRs, the official long-distance hiking routes, are also marked (although not as clearly as on hiking maps from other publishers). Where possible, both versions are included in our titles.
