Winner of the 1997 Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature, Paul Pritchard`s Deep Play is a unique, stylish & timeless commentary reflecting the pressures & rewards of climbing some of the world`s hardest & most challenging rock climbs. Pritchard started climbing in Lancashire before moving to join the vibrant Llanberis scene of the mid 1980s, at a time when the adventurous development of the Dinorwig slate quarries was in full swing. Many of the new slate routes were notable for their fierce technical difficulty & sparse protection, & Pritchard took a full part in this arcane sub-culture of climbing & at the same time deployed his skills on the Anglesey sea cliffs to produce a clutch of equally demanding wall climbs. Born with an adventurous soul, it was not long before Pritchard & his friends were planning exotic trips. In 1987, paired with Johnny Dawes, Pritchard made an epoch-making visit to Scotland`s Sron Ulladale to free its famous aid route, The Scoop. Pritchard & Dawes, with no previous altitude experience, then attempted the Catalan Pillar of Bhagirathi III in the Garwhal Himalaya in India, a precocious first expedition prematurely curtailed when Pritchard was hit by stonefall at the foot of the face. In 1992, Pritchard & Noel Craine teamed up with the alpinists Sean Smith & Simon Yates to climb a big wall route on the East Face of the Central Tower of Paine, Patagonia. Pritchard followed this with an equally fine first ascent of the West Face of Mt Asgard on Baffin Isl&. Other trips
- to Yosemite & Pakistan as well as returns to Patagonia
- resulted in a clutch of notable repeats, first ascents & some failures. The failure list also included two life threatening falls (one on Gogarth, the other on Creag Meaghaidh), which prompted the author into thought-provoking personal re-assessments, in advance of his later near-terminal accident on The Totem Pole in Tasmania. A penetrating view of the adventures & preoccupations of a contemporary player, Deep Play stands alone as a unique first-hand account of what many consider to be the last great era in British climbing.

There are 100, 000 freighters on the seas. Between them they carry nearly everything we eat, wear & work with. & yet this massive global industry has remained largely unexamined: it passes by out of sight for most of us &, through the `flags of convenience` system, its dubious practices often slip under the radar of regulators. In this unique investigation, Rose George travels the high seas with their powerful naval fleets, pirate gangs, & illegal floating factories, & visits the ports & their l&-bound dockworkers, tycoons, missionaries, stevedores, border control guards, & ship-spotters. She meets the beachcombers who track the 10, 000 containers that are lost every year, the robots who are gradually replacing human crews, & the environmentalists campaigning against the tide of marine pollution. Intrepid, informed & tenacious, George steers a sure course through the murky, character-rich waters of international shipping. ...

This book provides new & experienced observers with a fresh perspective on the Messier objects. Stephen James O' Meara has prepared a visual feast for the observer. For the past fifty years, Paul Theroux has travelled to the far corners of the earth; to China, India, Africa, the Pacific Islands, South America, Russia, & has brought them to life in his cool, exacting prose. In Deep South he turns his gaze to a region much closer to his home. Travelling through North & South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama & Arkansas, Paul Theroux writes of the stunning landscapes he discovers
- the deserts, the mountains, the Mississippi
- & above all, the lives of the people he meets. The South is a place of contradictions. There is the warm, open spirit of the soul food cafes, found in every town, no matter how small. There is the ruined grandeur of numberless ghostly towns, long abandoned by the industries that built them. There are the state gun shows & the close-knit, subtly forlorn tribe of people who attend & run them. Deep in the heart of his native country, Theroux discovers a land more profoundly foreign than anything he has previously experienced.
