Düsseldorf in 1944 in the Alan Godfrey series of reproductions of British War Office survey first published in 1945 prior to the Allied occupation of the area. The map covers most of Düsseldorf, running from Rath, Derendorf & Mörsenbroich southward to Stoffeln. Most of the city centre is included, together with the suburbs of Flingern, Lierenfeld, Kleineller, Grafenberg, Gerresheim & Neueller. The map is taken from sheet 2 of the pair of 1:10, 000 maps published by the British War Office for Düsseldorf. The maps are taken from the British War Office 1:12, 500 plans & reduced at Approx. 1:19, 000. Published in 1945, prior to the Allied occupation of the area, the maps are especially good at showing industry, collieries & transport. They are not bombing maps
- indeed, they make clear that allowance is not made for bomb damage
- but show the areas with all their industrial sites & railways largely as they were before the bombing raids of 1943-44. The maps have additional information added by British intelligence. This is normally accurate but allowance must be made for the `fog of war` & occasional spelling mistakes, etc. Each title has on the reverse a specially written introduction to the area in English, with a shorter text in German. About these maps: Street maps covering a slightly smaller area than that represented on the Falk Extra edition, thus folding down to a more handy size (10 x 17cm). Some of them are drawn with a varying scale which, for clarity, presents the city centre at a slightly larger scale than the outer districts. Main landmarks & public buildings are indicated, also one-way streets, car parks & all the public transport facilities eg. tram & bus routes, U-bahns. These plans of larger cities include a separate map of the town centre at a more detailed scale & a diagram of the U-Bahn & the suburban rail network. The plans also show the postal divisions & have an extensive street index on the reverse side which, where appropriate, shows individual postal codes for each street. De Biesbosch area of the Netherlands in a series of walking & cycling maps at 1:25, 000 – 1:35, 000, published by Falk BV in cooperation with Staatsbosbeheer – Dutch government’s organization for forestry & the management of nature reserves. Colouring indicates different types of vegetation or terrain: woodl&, pastures, heath or sand dunes. Given the topography of most of the country, the maps have no contour lines. The maps show local hiking trails, indicating their waymarking & include cycle paths & horse riding. Many local crossroads are annotated with the numbers of ANWB signposts & ‘mushrooms’ – a useful aid when navigating in Dutch countryside. Symbols indicate various tourist facilities & places of interest, including different types of accommodation, cafes, windmills, etc. The maps have no geographical coordinates.
