” If you`ve ever fantasized walking & conversing with the great scientist on the subjects that consumed him, & now wish to add the fullness of reality, read this book.” Edward O. Wilson James T. Costa takes readers on a journey from Darwin`s youth & travels on the HMS Beagle to Down House, his bustling home of forty years. To test his insights into evolution, Darwin devised an astonishing array of hands-on experiments using his garden & greenhouse, surrounding meadows & woodlands, even taking over the cellar, study, yard & hallways of his home-turned-field-station. Darwin engaged his children, friends & neighbours as assistants & encouraged fellow naturalists to follow his lead. His inventive experiments yielded universal truths about nature & evidence for his revolutionary arguments in On the Origin of Species & other watershed works. We accompany Darwin in his myriad pursuits against the backdrop of his enduring marriage, chronic illness, grief at the loss of three children, & joy in scientific revelation. At each chapter`s end, Costa shows how we too can investigate the wonders of nature at work, with directions on how to re-create Darwin`s experiments. ...

Soon after publication of On the Origin of Species, Charles Darwin received a letter that deeply unsettled him. He had expected outrage & accusations of heresy, but this letter was different: it accused him of taking credit for a theory that wasn`t his. Yet when he tried to trace his intellectual forebears, he found that history had already forgotten them... Rediscovering Aristotle on the shores of Lesbos & Leonardo da Vinci fossil hunting in the Tuscan hills, this is a masterful retelling of the collective daring of a few like-minded men, whose early theories flew in the face of prevailing political & religious orthodoxies & laid the foundations for Darwin`s revolutionary idea. ...

In this remarkable book Adrian Desmond & James Moore, world authorities on Darwin, give a completely new explanation of how Darwin came to his famous view of evolution, which traced all life to an ancient common ancestor. Darwin was committed to the abolition of slavery, in part because of his family`s deeply held beliefs. It was his ` Sacred Cause` & at its core lay a belief in human racial unity. Desmond & Moore show how he extended to all life the idea of human brotherhood held by those who fought to abolish slavery, so developing our modern view of evolution. Desmond & Moore argue that only by understanding Darwin`s Christian abolitionist inheritance can we shed new light on the perplexing mix of personal drive, public hesitancy & scientific radicalism that led him finally in 1871 to publish ” The Descent of Man, & Selection in Relation to Sex”. The result is an epoch-making study of this eminent Victorian. ...

A revelatory collection of letters written by the author of The Broken Road. Handsome, spirited & erudite, Patrick Leigh Fermor was a war hero & one of the greatest travel writers of his generation. He was also a spectacularly gifted friend. The letters in this collection span almost seventy years, the first written ten days before Paddy`s twenty-fifth birthday, the last when he was ninety-four. His correspondents include Deborah Devonshire, Ann Fleming, Nancy Mitford, Lawrence Durrell, Diana Cooper & his lifelong companion, Joan Rayner; he wrote his first letter to her in his cell at the monastery Saint Wandrille, the setting for his reflections on monastic life in A Time to Keep Silence. His letters exhibit many of his most engaging characteristics: his zest for life, his unending curiosity, his lyrical descriptive powers, his love of language, his exuberance & his tendency to get into scrapes
- particularly when drinking &, quite separately, driving. Here are plenty of extraordinary stories: the hunt for Byron`s slippers in one of the remotest regions of Greece; an ignominious dismissal from Somerset Maugham`s Villa Mauresque; hiding behind a bush to dub Dirk Bogarde into Greek during the shooting of Ill Met by Moonlight, the film based on the story of General Kreipe`s abduction; his extensive travels. Some letters contain glimpses of the great & the good, while others are included purely for the joy of the jokes.

Facebook can determine your sexual orientation without you ever mentioning it. The powers that surveil us do more than simply store this information. Corporations use surveillance to manipulate not only the news articles & advertisements we each see, but also the prices we`re offered. Governments use surveillance to discriminate, censor, chill free speech, & put people in danger worldwide. & both sides share this information with each other or, even worse, lose it to cybercriminals in huge data breaches. Much of this is voluntary: we cooperate with corporate surveillance because it promises us convenience, & we submit to government surveillance because it promises us protection. The result is a mass surveillance society of our own making. But have we given up more than we`ve gained? In Data & Goliath, security expert Bruce Schneier offers another path, one that values both security & privacy. He shows us exactly what we can do to reform our government surveillance programs & shake up surveillance-based business models, while also providing tips for you to protect your privacy every day. You`ll never look at your phone, your computer, your credit cards, or even your car in the same way again. ...

Dattu, sheet no. 2980-02, in the topographic survey of Nepal at 1:50, 000 published by the Nepali Government in the late 1990s & early 2000s & produced from remote sensing data by Finnish cartographers as part of that country’s international aid program. The maps cover 15’ x 15’ quadrangles.IMPORTANT – PLEASE NOTE BEFORE ORDERING: AVAILABILITY: although, theoretically at least, still in print, these maps are very difficult to get locally in Nepal and/or from various suppliers elsewhere specializing in obtaining such maps. DELIVERIES MAY TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS OR EVEN MONTHS.PROBLEMS WITH PLACE NAMES: reports from previous users indicate that transliteration of place names differs from that used widely not only on other maps & in guide books but also on the ground itself, in road signs & in the tourist & trekking industry in general. Whilst most names are similar enough to be easily recognizable, e.g. Namche Bajar for Namche Bazar or Lantan for Langtang, we have been told of confusion & difficulties arising from different spellings appearing on these maps.TREKKING ROUTES & TOURIST INFORMATION: whilst the maps show foot trails & mark locations of temples, etc, they carry no specific trekking information. Major trekking routes & places of interest are not highlighted. There is no marking for base camps & other tourist facilities. Map specifications: Contours are at 40m intervals, with graphics and/or coloring to show various features of the terrain (glaciers with moraines & crevasses, quarries, gravel or clay pits, etc.) & vegetation (forests, bush, grass, orchards & plantations, etc). Additional comments such as “open mixed forest mainly bajh & pine” annotate many area. The maps have numerous spot heights, but relatively few peaks are named. Areas outside the country’s borders are left blank. Settlements in remote areas are indicated by markings for individual buildings & the placing of names does not always make it clear which group of buildings they refer to. Road network distinguishes between major & minor foot trails. Symbols mark features such as temples, schools & hospitals, police stations, etc. Also shown are the country’s administrative divisions. The maps have a 1-km UTM grid, plus latitude & longitude lines at intervals of 5’. Map legend & all the text is in English. Coverage: the whole country is now covered, with the north at 1:50, 000, plus central & southern Nepal at 1:25, 000. The two series are complementary, do not overlap & use the same grid & numbering system (apart from the Lumbini Zone, where a different grid & numbering are used).
