In nature, trickery & deception are widespread. Animals & plants mimic other objects or species in the environment for protection, trick other species into rearing their young, lure prey to their death, & deceive potential mates for reproduction. Cuckoos lay eggs carefully matched to their host`s own clutch. Harmless butterflies mimic the wing patterning of a poisonous butterfly to avoid being eaten. The deep-sea angler fish hangs a glowing, fleshy lure in front of its mouth to draw the attention of potential prey, while some male fish alter their appearance to look like females in order to sneak past rivals in mating. Some orchids develop the smell of female insects in order to attract pollinators, while carnivorous plants lure insects to their death with colourful displays. In this book, Martin Stevens describes the remarkable range of such adaptations in nature, & considers how they have evolved, & become increasingly perfected as part of an arms race between predator & prey or host & parasite. He explores the work of naturalists & biologists from Alfred Russel Wallace to current research, showing how scientists find ways of testing the impact of particular behaviours & colourings on the animals it is meant to fool, as opposed to our human perceptions. Drawing on a wide range of examples, Stevens considers what deception tells us about the process of evolution & adaptation. ...

- MAP TITLES: the grids shown on our website serve both the civilian & the military 1:50, 000 topographic series. Although the areas covered by maps in both series are identical (apart from some border or coastal sheets), occasionally map titles differ – only one title is shown on the grid, usually the military one. In Galicia, the Basque country & in the Catalan speaking areas the tendency now is to use local place names rather than the often better known Castilian ones. Where possible, both versions are included in our titles. Map titles listed on our website are based on information received by us at the time of publication, but sometimes maps arrive showing a completely different title! As long as the map number is as ordered, the correct map has been supplied.

This book illuminates one of the world`s most troubled regions from a unique perspective--that of a prominent Russian intellectual. Valery Tishkov, a leading ethnographer who has also served in several important political posts, examines the evolution of the war in Chechnya that erupted in 1994, untangling the myths, the long-held resentments, & the ideological manipulations that have fueled the crisis. In particular, he explores the key themes of nationalism & violence that feed the turmoil there. Forceful, original, & timely, his study combines extensive interview material, historical perspectives, & deep local knowledge. Tishkov sheds light on Chechnya in particular & on how secessionist conflicts can escalate into violent conflagrations in general. With its balanced assessments of both Russian & Chechen perspectives, this book will be essential reading for people seeking to understand the role of Islamic fundamentalist nationalism in the contemporary world. ...

The war between Russia & the Chechen separatist forces, from December 1994 to August 1996, was a key moment in Russian & even world history, shedding a stark light on the end of Russia as a great military & imperial power. Anatol Lieven, a distinguished writer & political commentator, was a correspondent for the London Times in the former Soviet Union from 1990 to 1996 & was commended for his coverage of the Chechen War by the British Press Association. In this major new work of history & analysis, Lieven sets Russia`s humiliation at the hands of a tiny group of badly organized guerrillas in a plausible framework for the first time. He offers both a riveting eyewitness account of the war itself & a sophisticated & multifaceted explanation for the Russian defeat. Highlighting the numerous ways in which Russian society & culture differ today from the simplistic stereotypes still current in much of Western analysis, he explores the reasons for the current weakness of Russian nationalism both within the country & among the Russian diaspora. In the final part of the book Lieven examines the Chechen tradition, providing the first in-depth anthropological portrait in English of this extraordinary fighting people. In his representation of the character of the Chechen nation, Lieven contributes to the continuing debate between ”constructivist” & ”primordialist” theories of the origins of nationalism & examines the role of both historical experience & religion in the formation of national identity. ...

Chechnya - A Small Victorious War

In Chechnya: A Small Victorious War Carlotta Gall and Thomas de Waal tell the full story of how the Kremlin came to embark on such an ill-judged military adventure and how the Chechen fighters fought back. Switching between Chechnya and Moscow, the authors cover the whole sweep of the war from the horrendous destruction of the Russian invasion to the Chechens' dramatic retaliation to force the Russian army out. The book traces the roots of the conflict: the Chechens' history of resistance to the Russian empire, the rogue state set up by the eccentric general-turned-president Jokhar Dudayev as the Soviet Union fell apart, and the Kremlin court politics that precipitated the decision to invade Chechnya. With its exclusive material and eye-witness reporting, Chechnya: A Small Victorious
War is the definitive account of the most tragic and extraordinary story to emerge from the end of the Soviet Union. It is also the story of the flamboyant, anarchic and unyielding Chechens and their struggle for survival.
