This is a thoroughly modern book on the traditional open canoe. It covers all aspects of the open canoe, from design to wilderness travel. What really sets it apart is its focus on canoeing techniques. Ray Goodwin is the UK`s best known & (many would go so far as to say) foremost canoe coach. By introducing some of the latest canoeing performance skills, based on what he has discovered through decades of coaching & guiding, he sets out to inspire a new generation of paddlers. Through clear language & the use of photographs acquired over many years of paddling around the world, he shares some real insights of the reality of canoeing; sometimes gritty, but always enthralling. New in the 2nd edition is a section on `vision pattern`, a method for creating a mental map of a rapid. There is an expanded & re-written chapter on canoeing with children. There are more techniques for improvised sailing & more on advanced lining & tracking. It describes new solo rescue techniques & has many new inspirational canoe expedition examples. ...

Canoeing the Congo narrates the journey of Phil Harwood, who undertook an epic five-month solo attempt to canoe the Congo River in war-torn Central Africa. It was a historic 'first descent' from the true source in the highlands of Zambia. Just short of 3, 000 miles long, the Congo River is the eighth longest in the world & the deepest river in the world, with a flow rate second only to the Amazon. Along the way, Phil encountered numerous waterfalls, huge rapids, man-eating crocodiles, hippos, aggressive snakes & spiders' webs the size of houses. He faced endemic corruption, was arrested, intimidated, bullied, chased & he received numerous death threats. He also collapsed from malaria. The people were mostly friendly, however, & Phil received tremendous hospitality from a proud & brave people, especially from the riverside fishermen who helped him wherever they could. On one stretch of river known as ' The Abattoir' due to its past history of cannibalism & current reputation for criminal activity, he hired four brothers with a shotgun to accompany him as bodyguards. They paddled & floated for five days & nights on the river. Common questions from locals were, why haven't you cut his throat yet? & if you don't want to do it, tell us where you're camping & we'll come & do it for you.. . We'll share his money. It was an exhilarating, terrifying & wonderful journey but Phil managed to survive, despite the odds, to tell his story. Canoeing the Congo will appeal to fans of adventurous travel writing & people who love the nature & wilderness. Phil, who is a fan of adventure stories himself, enjoys the work of Ranulph Fiennes & Bill Bryson. ...

Although the areas covered by maps in both series are identical (apart from some border or coastal sheets), occasionally map titles differ – only one title is shown on the grid, usually the military one. In Galicia, the Basque country & in the Catalan speaking areas the tendency now is to use local place names rather than the often better known Castilian ones. Where possible, both versions are included in our titles. Map titles listed on our website are based on information received by us at the time of publication, but sometimes maps arrive showing a completely different title! As long as the map number is as ordered, the correct map has been supplied.
