Map No. 2522, Bray, in South Africa’s official topographic survey at 1:250, 000 from the country’s national survey organization, the Chief Directorate of Surveys & Mapping. The maps have altitude colouring & contours at 50m or 100m intervals, depending on the map edition, plus spot heights. Deserts, marshes, dry pans, perennial & seasonal water features, etc, as well as protected areas are shown. The maps present the country’s road & rail networks & include the usual information expected on topographic mapping at this scale, although in more rapidly developing areas road information may not necessarily be up to date. Also indicated are magisterial district & provincial boundaries. Latitude & longitude values are shown in the margins at 5` intervals together with South African grid co-ordinates. Topographic survey of France at 1:25, 000 in IGN`s excellent TOP25 / Série Bleue series. All the maps are GPS compatible, with a 1km UTM grid plus latitude & longitude lines at 5’ intervals. Contours are at 5m intervals except for mountainous areas where the maps have contours at 10m intervals, vividly enhanced by hill shading & graphics for rocky terrain. Colouring with graphics indicates different types of vegetation or land use (deciduous or coniferous forests, moors, orchards, vineyards, etc). Map No. 2408E, Bray-sur-Somme, in IGN’s excellent, detailed topographic survey of France at 1:25, 000. The top half of this map covers the south-eastern part of the front lines of the Battle of the Somme in World War I, from Fricourt eastwards including Mametz, Longueval with the memorial to the South African troops, Delville Wood & Guillemont. Although not specifically designed to show WWI memorial sites & best used in conjunctions with one of the specialist maps of the Western Front or the Battle of the Somme, maps in the IGN 1:25, 000 series are ideal for locating access to the numerous small British war cemeteries & memorials scattered across this area. One of the titles in a series of topographic maps covering much of north-west Africa, produced as part of the IMW* project in 1960’s. Each map covers an area spanning 6° in longitude & 4° in latitude. There is some variation in colouring & the depiction of terrain, but hill-shading, spot heights & contours are used to show the general relief. Additional graphics show features such as dunes, rock outcrops, cliffs, sand areas, escarpments, marshes, seasonal lakes & watercourses, & areas liable to flooding. Administrative boundaries are marked & latitude & longitude lines are drawn at 1° intervals, with further margin ticks at 1’ intervals.
