Bradshaw’s Railway Map of Great Britain from 1839 reproduced by Collins as a wall map, size 87.5 x 140cm (34.5” x 55” approx). Although placed on a plain beige background for the surrounding seas, the map has plenty of colour to show county boundaries & emphasize the coastline. The map shows the by then already extensive road network, rivers & canals, plus a large number of towns & villages. Railway lines are drawn in different colours: red for the completed or in progress lines, blue for routes already confirmed by acts of Parliament, & yellow for the proposed lines. An enlargement presents the London area in better detail. Surrounding the map are numerous route profiles
- a lovely way to present the topography & once a standard feature of atlases & many maps; from the flat-as-a-pancake Hull to Selby, Edinburgh to Glasgow, or Dundee to Arbroath railways to more exciting routes between Stockton & Darlington, Birmingham & Gloucester or the Bolton & Leigh & Kenyon & Leigh railways.
