The Brabant Island to Argentine Islands 1:250, 000 map from British Atlantic Survey is an interesting & visually impressive topographic & bathymetric overview map of the Danco Coast & all islands off it, based on satellite imagery. This one-sided map covers both Palmer & Wilhelm archipelagos & all land from Herbert Plateau & Forbidden Plateau to the Bruce Plateau with its glaciers. The survey data used for this map is derived from satellite data, & is not verified for navigational use. It is, however, a beautiful & informative overview of this area. The map uses satellite imagery as its base, making it visually stunning. The map shows offshore rocks, peaks, many feature names, glaciers & lakes. It also marks scientific stations, with nationalities, indicating whether they are permanent or seasonal. Antarctic Special Protected Areas (APSAs) & Historic Sites & Monuments (HSMs) are marked on the map, & listed to the side, with their Antarctic Treaty numbers. Land above sea is shown with LANDSAT satellite imagery as its base. The sea is shown with blue shading indicating bathymetric depth bands. Ice-covered & ice-free coastlines are differentiated. Described by the publishers as a topographic series, the maps do carry all the information expected of topographic mapping at this scale, but are not contoured & show altitude only by spot heights. Colours & graphics present the terrain & land cover: rocks, dunes, moors & heathl&, orchards, woodlands, swamps & marshl&, etc. Road network is finely graded according to width & the number of lanes. Footpaths are marked, but the maps do not distinguish between waymarked hiking paths or long-distance GR routes & other local paths. The network consists of numbered junctions joined by sign-posted connecting routes in either direction. At each junction there is an information panel showing an overview map of the whole network with the junction numbers. A second panel shows all the intersections directly connected to that junction. The system enables cyclists to plan their own routes by preparing a list of junction numbers through which they want to travel. Falk maps give cycling distances between the junctions & indicate which roads, both within the numbered network & outside it, have separate cycling paths. Routes which are part of the LF network of long-distance cycle routes are clearly marked. A wide range of symbols shows various accommodation options, bars & restaurants, & various places of interest. The island of Brac on the Adriatic coast of Croatia on a contoured & GPS compatible map at 1:25, 000 from the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service, highlighting recommended cycling routes, with 26 routes profiles. The island is shown on both sides of the map with similar cartography (contours at 10m intervals enhanced by relief shading to provide excellent presentation of the terrain) but with different cycling information. On one side, additional colouring & graphics show the vegetation. Recommended cycle routes are prominently highlighted & indicate distances.
