Why do bookshops matter? How do they filter our ideas & literature? In this inventive & highly entertaining extended essay, Jorge Carrion takes his reader on a journey around the world, via its bookshops. His travels take him to Shakespeare & Co in Paris, Wells in Winchester, Green Apple Books in San Francisco, Librairie des Colonnes in Tangier, the Strand Book Store in New York & provoke encounters with thinkers, poets, dreamers, revolutionaries & readers. Bookshops is the travelogue of a lucid & curious observer, filled with anecdotes & stories from the universe of writing, publishing & selling books. A bookshop in Carrion`s eyes never just a place for material transaction; it is a meeting place for people & their ideas, a setting for world changing encounters, a space that can transform lives. Written in the midst of a worldwide recession, Bookshops examines the role of these spaces in today`s evershifting climate of globalisation, vanishing high streets, e-readers & Amazon. But far from taking a pessimistic view of the future of the physical bookshop, Carrion makes a compelling case for hope, underlining the importance of these places & the magic that can happen there. A vital manifesto for the future of the traditional bookshop, & a delight for all who love them. ...

` Passionate, witty, informed, & gloriously opinionated` Jacqueline Wilson`I felt like this was written just for me, & I think everyone will feel this way` Jenny Colgan` Beautiful & moving... It will kickstart a cascade of nostalgia for countless people` Marian Keyes When Lucy Mangan was little, stories were everything. They opened up new worlds & cast light on all the complexities she encountered in this one. She was whisked away to Narnia
- & Kirrin Island
- & Wonderl&. She ventured down rabbit holes & womble burrows into midnight gardens & chocolate factories. She wandered the countryside with Milly-Molly-Mandy, & played by the tracks with the Railway Children. With Charlotte`s Web she discovered Death & with Judy Blume it was Boys. No wonder she only left the house for her weekly trip to the library or to spend her pocket money on amassing her own at home. In Bookworm, Lucy revisits her childhood reading with wit, love & gratitude. She relives our best-beloved books, their extraordinary creators, & looks at the thousand subtle ways they shape our lives. She also disinters a few forgotten treasures to inspire the next generation of bookworms & set them on their way. Lucy brings the favourite characters of our collective childhoods back to life
- prompting endless re-readings, rediscoveries, &, inevitably, fierce debate
- & brilliantly uses them to tell her own story, that of a born, & unrepentant, bookworm.

In ” Boomerang” Michael Lewis, the international bestselling author of ” The Big Short”, ” Liars` Poker”, ” The Blind Side” & ” Moneyball”, turns his trademark wit to the subject of how the financial meltdown hit us all in the face. Right now, Europe is in serious financial chaos. In Greece, infrastructure costs mean it would be cheaper to transport all Greek rail passengers by taxi, & hairdressing is classified as arduous for tax avoidance purposes. In Icel&, Range Rovers frequently explode as owners collect the insurance to pay for them. Ireland saw the entire country put up for sale
- to itself, while the Germans expected the whole world to behave like them. But the whole world didn`t. In this hilarious, fascinating, timely must-read, Michael Lewis reveals the true natures of the countries caught up in
- & exacerbating
- our boomerang economies.

Set of two loose sheets of inner London (each measuring 91x 70cm) at Approx. 1:10, 000, colour-coding each street according to the relative wealth of its inhabitants in 1889; a fascinating look at what London life was like in this defining era. Between 1886 & 1889 a wealthy London Businessman called Charles Booth & his team of assistants conducted a research on the living & working conditions of London's inhabitants. The project is representative of the Victorian's concern & interest towards the urban society. Booth's survey was thorough & accurate. Based initially on school board officials' reports, the research was then extended to local authorities' appraisals, including reports from teachers, clergy & lay helpers. Particular attention was dedicated to acquiring information on the habits of the poorer sections of society & this meant visiting numerous parts of London street-by-street, often house-by-house. Every house was marked with a seven-point colour grade, from the peachy yellow Upper-Middle & Upper Classes (described as 'wealthy') to the black Lowest Classes (' Vicious
- Semi-Criminal')
- shock or amazement are left to the reader.A 12 page booklet is included detailing the map's history, & life at the time of it's publication.
