Belgravia & Knightsbridge represent the wealthy face of modern London, but it was not always that way. Belgravia did not exist before the 1820s, its site a bleak expanse of open countryside. Knightsbridge was a straggling settlement along the main highway from the west. Proximity to London & the Royal Parks was the key. Grand mansions arose in Knightsbridge & on the ` Five Fields` a classical townscape took shape from the 1820s
- they called it ` Belgravia`. The Victorians welded both districts firmly to the capital, & with the photographs in this book we can follow the story through the Edwardian era & compare what the Edwardians saw & what we see today. Along the way are carriage-filled streets, grand hotels & an array of traders & shopkeepers, the lifeblood of Edwardian London. This unique portrayal of two iconic localities will delight & intrigue Londoners & visitors alike.

“ Believe in People” contains some of the most famous pieces by the beloved Czech author Karel Capek. His newspaper columns collated in this book are provocative but cleverly written & inspired – as is the anthology’s title – by Capek’s humanistic beliefs. The anthology also contains many of Capek’s letters to his wife Olga, which are deeply touching. Translated by the renowned academic Sarka Tobrmanova-Kuhnova & with an introduction by Oxford University’s John Carey, this is the most authoritative collection of Capek’s work in translation to date. ...

`I know why I`m doing all this, ` I said. ` Everything I do in life is trying to get her back. I think if I do enough things.. .that maybe she`ll come back.` When Eddie Izzard was six, he & his brother Mark lost their mother. That day, he lost his childhood too. Despite or perhaps because of this, he has always felt he needed to take on things that some people would consider impossible. In Believe Me, Eddie takes us on a journey which begins in Yemen (before the revolution), then takes us to Northern Ireland (before The Troubles), England & Wales, then across the seas to Europe & America. In a story jam-packed with incident he tells of teddy bear shows on boarding school beds, renouncing accountancy for swordfighting on the streets of London & making those first tentative steps towards becoming an Action Transvestite, touring France in French & playing the Hollywood Bowl. Above all, this is a tale about someone who has always done everything his own way (which often didn`t work at first) &, sometimes almost by accident but always with grit & determination, achieving what he set out to do. Brimming with the surreal humour & disarming candor of his shows (with occasional digressions), Believe Me tells the story of a little boy who lost his mother yet who has risen to become a star of comedy & drama, a leading advocate of total clothing rights, a British European & extreme runner of marathons, who bestrides the world stage as a world stage bestrider. ...

Whether he was putting on teddy bear shows on boarding school beds or swordfighting on the streets of London, Eddie never stopped trying to achieve his dreams of becoming a performer. Brimming with his distinctively surreal humour & disarming candour, Believe Me tells the story of a boy who never took no for an answer.” This book is a raw, honest exploration of what it means to live your truth, to be unapologetically ambitious. It`s about being brave. & hilarious.” Chelsea Handler` King of the Universe... Comic genius...
