` Bedlam!` The very name conjures up graphic images of naked patients chained among filthy straw, or parading untended wards deluded that they are Napoleon or Jesus Christ. We owe this image of madness to William Hogarth, who, in plate eight of his 1735 Rake`s Progress series, depicts the anti-hero in Bedlam, the latest addition to a freak show providing entertainment for Londoners between trips to the Tower Zoo, puppet shows & public executions. That this is still the most powerful image of Bedlam, over two centuries later, says much about our attitude to mental illness, although the Bedlam of the popular imagination is long gone. The hospital was relocated to the suburbs of Kent in 1930, & Sydney Smirke`s impressive Victorian building in Southwark took on a new role as the Imperial War Museum. The International BEDMAP Consortium produced this topographic map of the bed beneath the Antarctic ice sheet, using all known ice-thickness measurements, at a scale of 1:10, 000, 000. The map contains information on how the ice-thickness model was generated; a key explaining the colour-coding & relevant thickness; a summary of ice-thickness data sources in the BEDMAP database; A 100km matrix reliability diagram indicating the reliability of the grounded ice sheet model. As well as this there is a detailed introduction to the map. Around the main map & on the reverse are numerous additional map panels & notes providing a fascinating insight on how the information used on this unusual map was gathered. Based by the British Antarctic Survey on Bedmap 2 – a large collaborative international project involving around 60 scientists from 35 institutions in 14 countries – the map was produced in 2013 from various types of data used to calculate the thickness of Antarctica’s ice cover. The result, in bright colouring for the bed height above the sea level & the depth below it, presents a much altered picture from the one offered by conventional maps of the Antarctic. The map has latitude & longitude lines at 15º & also shows the lines of the four cross-section panels which accompany it. Several more panels, photos & explanatory notes provide more information about the Bedmap 2 Project, plus full technical specifications including data sources & references. Topographic coverage of mainland Spain at 1:50, 000 in the MTN50 (Mapa Topográfico Nacional) series from the Centro Nacional de Información Geografica, the country’s civilian survey organization. The maps have contours at 20m intervals, enhanced by relief shading, plus colouring and/or graphics to show different types of terrain, vegetation or land use. Boundaries of national parks & other protected areas are marked. In addition to all the usual information featured on topographic mapping at this scale, detailed presentation of the road & rail networks, rural tracks & paths, etc, the maps also show campsites & mountain refuges. On more recent editions some GRs, the official long-distance hiking routes, are also marked (although not as clearly as on hiking maps from other publishers). Each map covers 29.5x 18.5 km (with adjustments in the border or coastal areas). The maps have a 1-km UTM grid, plus margin ticks for latitude & longitude at 1` intervals. - MAP TITLES: the grids shown on our website serve both the civilian & the military 1:50, 000 topographic series. Although the areas covered by maps in both series are identical (apart from some border or coastal sheets), occasionally map titles differ – only one title is shown on the grid, usually the military one. In Galicia, the Basque country & in the Catalan speaking areas the tendency now is to use local place names rather than the often better known Castilian ones. Where possible, both versions are included in our titles. Map titles listed on our website are based on information received by us at the time of publication, but sometimes maps arrive showing a completely different title! As long as the map number is as ordered, the correct map has been supplied.
