Bedfordshire, Huntingdon & Peterborough Pevsner Architectural Guide, in a series of publications begun with the express aim of providing up-to-date guides to the most significant buildings in every part of the country, suitable for both general reader & specialist. Each volume provides an introductory overview of the architecture of the area, followed by a descriptive gazetteer arranged alphabetically by place. Whilst cathedrals & their furnishings, great country houses & their parks form the grand set pieces, the books demonstrate the enjoyable diversity of architecture in the British Isles in accounts of rural churches & farmsteads, Victorian public buildings & industrial monuments. A continuing programme of publication keeps the series up-to-date with new information on older buildings & recent architecture while maintaining the tradition of Pevsner's own succinct accounts. Each book has over 100 photographs, mostly specially commissioned, numerous maps & plans, a glossary & indexes. ...

Bedfordshire is one of the smallest English counties but encompasses a great variety in landscape & architecture. Its major monument is Woburn Abbey, one of the finest Georgian country houses in Engl&, & the influence of the estate is widely felt in the model housing & schools in the county`s villages. Its many other attractions range from the churches of the market towns of Bedford, Leighton Buzzard & Ampthill to the majestic gardens at Wrest Park. Such variety is also to be found in Huntingdonshire & Peterborough, famous not only for the Cathedral & the spires of the stone medieval parish churches scattered across its remote & intimate landscape but also for vast & stately Burghley House & Vanbrugh`s Kimbolton Castle. This fully revised edition of Pevsner`s original guide of 1968 contains separate introductions, gazetteers & photographs for Bedfordshire & Huntingdonshire & Peterborough. ...

` Bedlam!` The very name conjures up graphic images of naked patients chained among filthy straw, or parading untended wards deluded that they are Napoleon or Jesus Christ. We owe this image of madness to William Hogarth, who, in plate eight of his 1735 Rake`s Progress series, depicts the anti-hero in Bedlam, the latest addition to a freak show providing entertainment for Londoners between trips to the Tower Zoo, puppet shows & public executions. That this is still the most powerful image of Bedlam, over two centuries later, says much about our attitude to mental illness, although the Bedlam of the popular imagination is long gone. The hospital was relocated to the suburbs of Kent in 1930, & Sydney Smirke`s impressive Victorian building in Southwark took on a new role as the Imperial War Museum. Following the historical narrative structure of her acclaimed Necropolis, BEDLAM examines the capital`s treatment of the insane over the centuries, from the founding of Bethlehem Hospital in 1247 through the heyday of the great Victorian asylums to the more enlightened attitudes that prevail today. ...

Based by the British Antarctic Survey on Bedmap 2 – a large collaborative international project involving around 60 scientists from 35 institutions in 14 countries – the map was produced in 2013 from various types of data used to calculate the thickness of Antarctica’s ice cover. The result, in bright colouring for the bed height above the sea level & the depth below it, presents a much altered picture from the one offered by conventional maps of the Antarctic. The map has latitude & longitude lines at 15º & also shows the lines of the four cross-section panels which accompany it. Several more panels, photos & explanatory notes provide more information about the Bedmap 2 Project, plus full technical specifications including data sources & references. Full BAS reference for this title is ”BAS (Misc) 9”. This title is also available in a folded format.PLEASE NOTE: to see other BAS maps of wider general interest please click on the series link. Boundaries of national parks & other protected areas are marked. In addition to all the usual information featured on topographic mapping at this scale, detailed presentation of the road & rail networks, rural tracks & paths, etc, the maps also show campsites & mountain refuges. On more recent editions some GRs, the official long-distance hiking routes, are also marked (although not as clearly as on hiking maps from other publishers). Each map covers 29.5x 18.5 km (with adjustments in the border or coastal areas). The maps have a 1-km UTM grid, plus margin ticks for latitude & longitude at 1` intervals. Map legend is in Spanish only.HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT 50K MAP: all the titles in CNIG’s 200K Provincial Road Maps series at 1:200, 000 are overprinted with the grid for the 1:50, 000 maps & can be used to see the area covered by each 50K title. TO SEE THE LIST OF TITLES IN THIS SERIES PLEASE CLICK ON THE SERIES LINK.PLEASE NOTE
- MAP TITLES: the grids shown on our website serve both the civilian & the military 1:50, 000 topographic series. Although the areas covered by maps in both series are identical (apart from some border or coastal sheets), occasionally map titles differ – only one title is shown on the grid, usually the military one. In Galicia, the Basque country & in the Catalan speaking areas the tendency now is to use local place names rather than the often better known Castilian ones. Where possible, both versions are included in our titles. Map titles listed on our website are based on information received by us at the time of publication, but sometimes maps arrive showing a completely different title! As long as the map number is as ordered, the correct map has been supplied.

The deserts of the Middle East cover an area almost as large as Western Europe & include some of the most inhospitable places on Earth. But the customs of the Bedu, who have for centuries herded their livestock back & forth across this wilderness, developed in response to these grim conditions. Today, however, their nomadic culture is under threat with the encroachment of industrialisation & mineral exploitation onto their unfettered lands, & new generations are seeking employment rather than living off herds. Bedouin is a unique & beautiful portrait of the Arab nomad's life, rich in colour & culture. It depicts everything from their everyday chores of cooking & collecting water to the more exotic tasks of weaving, moving camp & celebrating feasts. ...

In my dreams, I was always in some vast landscape on a long, straight road. Driving. Always driving.` Gwenda had always loved the open road, but her home town of Newcastle didn`t really offer the sort of adventure she longed for. So, in 1957, with friend & fellow nurse Pat in tow, she left the dismal British winter behind, & embarked on an amazing American adventure. After a year nursing in Clevel&, Gwenda, Pat & three new friends set off on a road trip around North America, driving in a rickety 1949 Ford. What follows is the charming true story of five remarkable young women. Over the course of eighteen months, the girls go to a 4th July rodeo, visit San Francisco & Las Vegas, learn to surf in Hawaii, spot movie stars in Hollywood & celebrate Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Wherever they go, the travelling nurses cause a sensation. This is a delightfully nostalgic memoir of friendship & the romance of the open road. ...
