Beckton in 1894 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. Two versions of this map have been published to show how the area developed across the years. Until the 1840s Beckton was ”a marshy waste, a notorious venue for illegal prize-fighting” writes author Stephen Pewsey, & these maps still show an area with few inhabitants. The principal feature is the vast Gas Works of the Gas Light & Coke Company, shown here with all its many railway sidings, & adjacent to a large Tar & Liquor Works. The Northern Outfall Sewer runs across the map, as does the GER Beckton Branch, with its Beckton station. Other features include the group of streets known as Cyprus, a section of the Royal Albert Docks Railway, St Michael & All Angels church, & the group of houses known as Roman Road. The 1894 map also

Includes::
a section of Essex Sheet 73.16, which takes coverage northward across the marshes, up High Street South, Gooseley Lane & Claps Gate Lane. The 1914 map has a 1915 GER Timetable for the Liverpool Street to North Woolwich line, including occasional trains to Beckton. About the Alan Godfrey Editions of the 25” OS Series: Selected towns in Great Britain & Ireland are covered by maps showing the extent of urban development in the last decades of the 19th & early 20th century. The plans have been taken from the Ordnance Survey mapping & reprinted at about 15 inches to one mile (1:4, 340). On the reverse most maps have historical notes & many also include extracts from contemporary directories. Most maps cover about one mile (1.6kms) north/south, one & a half miles (2.4kms) across; adjoining sheets can be combined to provide wider coverage.FOR MORE INFORMATION & A COMPLETE LIST OF ALL AVAILABLE TITLES PLEASE CLICK ON THE SERIES LINK.

An intimate, powerful, & inspiring memoir by the former First Lady of the United States In a life filled with meaning & accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic & compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America
- the first African-American to serve in that role
- she helped create the most welcoming & inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women & girls in the U.S. & around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier & more active lives, & standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, & raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare. In her memoir, a work of deep reflection & mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her
- from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood & work, to her time spent at the world`s most famous address. With unerring honesty & lively wit, she describes her triumphs & her disappointments, both public & private, telling her full story as she has lived it
- in her own words & on her own terms. Warm, wise, & revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul & substance who has steadily defied expectations
- & whose story inspires us to do the same.

Becontree Heath & Valence House in 1915 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. The map shows what was still a very rural scene between Ilford & Romford. Vallance House (here spelt Vallance) is at the centre of the map & the area would change when the LCC bought the manor for building development in 1921. Green Lane crosses the map west-east, Bennett`s Castle Lane runs north-south, & Wood Lane runs between them. The only significant development is at the north-eastern corner where there is Beacontree (or Becontree) Heath with a few houses around it.
