` Every man had not only a weak spot but also a criminal one` At his wife`s insistence, upstanding citizen & artillery officer Anselm Eibenschutz leaves his beloved Austro-Hungarian army & takes up a civilian post, as Inspector of Weights & Measures in a remote backwater near the Russian border. At first he does everything by the book, but gradually he finds himself adrift in a world of petty corruption, bribery & drunkenness
- & undone by his passion for the beautiful gypsy Euphemia. A haunting evocation of Eastern Europe`s borderlands in the early twentieth century, Weights & Measures is also the story of the disintegration of a good man. Translated by David Le Vay

Weimar Germany still fascinates us, & now this complex & remarkably creative period & place has the history it deserves. Eric Weitz`s Weimar Germany reveals the Weimar era as a time of strikingly progressive achievements--and even greater promise. With a rich thematic narrative & detailed portraits of some of Weimar`s greatest figures, this comprehensive history recaptures the excitement & drama as it unfolded, viewing Weimar in its own right--and not as a mere prelude to the Nazi era. Weimar Germany tells how Germans rose from the defeat of World War I & the turbulence of revolution to forge democratic institutions & make Berlin a world capital of avant-garde art. Setting the stage for this story, Weitz takes the reader on a walking tour of Berlin to see & feel what life was like there in the 1920s, when modernity & the modern city--with its bright lights, cinemas, ”new women, ” cabarets, & sleek department stores--were new. We learn how Germans enjoyed better working conditions & new social benefits & listened to the utopian prophets of everything from radical socialism to communal housing to nudism. Weimar Germany also explores the period`s revolutionary cultural creativity, from the new architecture of Erich Mendelsohn, Bruno Taut, & Walter Gropius to Hannah Hoch`s photomontages & Bertolt Brecht & Kurt Weill`s theater. Other chapters assess the period`s turbulent politics & economy, & the recipes for fulfilling sex lives propounded by new ”sexologists.” Yet Weimar Germany also shows that beneath this glossy veneer lay political turmoil that ultimately led to the demise of the republic & the rise of the radical Right. Thoroughly up-to-date, skillfully written, & strikingly illustrated, Weimar Germany brings to life as never before an era of creativity unmatched in the twentieth century-one whose influence & inspiration we still feel today. In a new chapter, Weitz depicts Weimar`s global impact in the decades after the destruction of the republic, when so many of its key cultural & political figures fled Nazi Germany. The Weimar style they carried with them has powerfully influenced art, urban design, & intellectual life from Tokyo to Ankara, Brasilia to New York. They made Weimar an example of all that is liberating, & all that can go wrong, in a democracy. ...

Weimar Extra

Falk, one of Germany's leading publishers of street plans, produce their town plans in two different formats. Falk Extra plans are folded in a standard way, where the whole map can be opened to view the entire area it covers. For larger cities, the same mapping is also published with a special folding system designed to show only a small section of the map at one time. The whole map can be opened but it will be cut in several places. Many find these street plans very user-friendly and easier to handle than conventional maps. The plans, which cover towns with their outer suburbs, indicate main landmarks and public buildings and show all the public transport facilities, one way streets and car parks. Plans of lager cities include a separate map of the town centre at a more detailed
scale and a diagram of the underground and the suburban rail network. The plans also show the postal divisions and have an extensive street index which, where appropriate, shows individual postal codes for each street. Map legend includes English. Falk Extra plans also include on the reverse a road map of the surrounding area.
