` Victorians & Edwardians abroad: the beginning of the modern holiday` reveals a story never told before: the early years of one of Britain`s leading modern travel agencies, the Polytechnic Touring Association (PTA). Created in 1888 within Britain`s first Polytechnic, the PTA was an emblem of the era. It served a growing mass of middle-class & lower middle-class consumers, who found for the first time that they had the time & money to take extended holidays, often abroad. This book explains the creation of the Polytechnic & the PTA, charting the expansion of the travel agency into continental Europe & beyond. ` Victorians & Edwardians abroad` uncovers the recollections of those who went on ` Poly holidays` before 1914: how they experienced the journeys, what they did when they reached their destinations & what they thought holidays should be about. For all the serious strictures from their social `betters` about the educational & `improving` aspects of travel, PTA holidaymakers enjoyed themselves: liberating pork pies from train carriages, annoying foreign policemen & even beating the German Emperor to the last horses in town. Letters, articles & diaries of Poly holidays reveal a penchant for fun, even naughtiness, not often associated with the Victorians & Edwardians. Also included are a selection of postcards, photographs & promotional items from the PTA archives. Victorians & Edwardians abroad is a fascinating glimpse into holidays as they were, just over a hundred years ago. ...

`A work of formidable scholarship that propels the reader from idea to idea. Reading it is like unravelling the bandages on a mummy to find the face of the past staring back in all its terrible & poignant humanity` Financial Times A groundbreaking account of what it was like to live in a Victorian body from one of our best historians. Why did the great philosophical novelist George Eliot feel so self-conscious that her right hand was larger than her left? Exactly what made Darwin grow that iconic beard in 1862, a good five years after his contemporaries had all retired their razors? Who knew Queen Victoria had a personal hygiene problem as a young woman & the crisis that followed led to a hurried commitment to marry Albert? What did John Sell Cotman, a handsome drawing room operator who painted some of the most exquisite watercolours the world has ever seen, feel about marrying a woman whose big nose made smart people snigger? How did a working-class child called Fanny Adams disintegrate into pieces in 1867 before being reassembled into a popular joke, one we still reference today, but would stop, appalled, if we knew its origins? Kathryn Hughes follows a thickened index finger or deep baritone voice into the realms of social history, medical discourse, aesthetic practise & religious observance
- its language is one of admiring glances, cruel sniggers, an implacably turned back. The result is an eye-opening, deeply intelligent, groundbreaking account that brings the Victorians back to life & helps us understand how they lived their lives.
