The brand new & final novel from the magical pen of `the Godmother of Fantasy`, Diana Wynne Jones; co-authored with her sister Ursula Jones. Now in paperback. How are you supposed to turn into a Wise Woman if your powers just won`t show up? Aileen is convinced she`ll never become as magical as her Aunt Beck. Then one day her aunt is set a seemingly impossible mission. She must go to the island of Logra & rescue the kidnapped High Prince from the enemy, & Aileen must go with her. They set off along with Ivar, Aileen`s spoilt cousin, & Ogo his clophopping servant, recruiting on their way a huge & elusive cat, a monk with an uncannily wise parrot, & a boy inventor who keeps a pet lizard up his sleeve. But this is no band of mighty warriors, & the evil Lograns & their wizards have blocked their way with an invisible barrier in the sea. Aileen doubts that even with all the magic in the Islands of Chaldea, including Aunt Beck`s, they will be able to penetrate it. But Aileen is about to discover that she could be more important to the mission than she realises. Perhaps it is her, above all, who is being drawn to Logra, & for a very special purpose... ...

The Isle Of Man, an original antique map by T. Moule, published in London, 1833 -1843. A steel plate engraving, coloured. Map size 26 x 19 cm with a mount size of 41 x 35 cm. Illustrated with heraldry & a Celtic allegorical figure to represent the isl&. Maps by Thomas Moule (1784-1851) are probably, with those by Speed, the best known of all series of English county maps. Issued from 1830, the maps combine a clarity of cartographic style with immense detail, by way of vignette views, scenes & portraits relating to the county shown, often set within a gothic architectural or floral surround, into which armorial devices & so on are worked. As the editions of the maps were published, first in The English Counties Delineated & later in Barclay's English Dictionary, the development of the network of railways throughout England can be observed. Moule, like many other map-makers & map-sellers before him, was a man of many talents. As an author his output included books & papers on topography, history, genealogy, heraldry & architecture; the maps which he designed show elements of these studies. The 57 maps & plans produced for Moule's English Counties Delineated, originally issued as a part-work, include maps of each English county, the towns of London, Bath, Boston, Portsmouth & Plymouth, & the Isles of Wight, Man & Thanet. Frequently entitled the last series of decorative county maps they are good informative maps, as popular now as they were in the early years of Queen Victoria's reign. Antique maps from various original publishers are presented on the Stanford ...

The Isle of Wight is England`s largest isl&, but its diamond-shape is at most 23 miles long & 13 miles wide. Anchored close to the Hampshire coast, its location has created a sheltered waterway, the Solent, with its own local roadsteads & a unique double tidal system. This geography has shaped the area`s history. Southampton`s docks, located on Southampton Water to the north-west, had become the country`s largest civilian port by the mid-twentieth century. Just north-east across the stretch of water called Spithead is the island city of Portsmouth with its ideal natural harbour. This was an internationally important port for over three hundred years, while the whole area has been places of naval significance on the world stage for even longer. From when Queen Victoria bought Osborne House in 1845 & had it remodelled as an Italianate mansion the Isle of Wight became a hub of Victorian society. The Poet Laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson lived at Freshwater, while Charles Swinburne grew up at Bonchurch, a place where Charles Dickens vacationed. Charles Darwin began his Origin of Species here, & Karl Marx came to restore his health; it was the expanding rail network that brought them there. Mark Bardell explores the Isle of Wight & Portsmouth & the surrounding maritime landscapes, revealing unexpected historical & literary associations. MARITIME LEGACY: seaside resorts & piers; Queen Victoria`s bathing machine; tourism, festivals & Cowes Week; the Titanic & Queen Mary. URBAN DESIGN & ARCHITECTURE: military & naval imperatives; Portsmouth Dockyard & the Solent forts; lighthouses & fortifications; Victorian mansions & the first garden suburb in Southsea. WRITERS & ARTISTS: Portsmouth & Rudyard Kipling, H. G. Wells & Arthur Conan Doyle; the Isle of Wight & the young Turner`s seascapes; J. D. Fergusson & Eric Ravilious, war artists in Portsmouth. ...
