Southampton West in 1908 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. Southampton is covered by three titles. Few areas have changed more comprehensively than this map, for in 1908 the tide still came up to the western shore & almost up to the station. This land was infilled as part of the Western Docks project between 1927 & 1934. The map shows the area from French Street northward to Polygon Road, & westward to Waterloo Road. Though much of the map was mud & sand in 1908, with several creeks, there is still much of interest, including Bugle Street, St Michael`s church, Western Esplanade, Corporation Baths, West Quay, Lansdowne Hill, Polygon, West Marlands (before the Civic Centre was built), West Park, Thorners Charity, Southampton West station, Fourposts, Blechynden, etc.. About the Alan Godfrey Editions of the 25” OS Series Selected towns in Great Britain & Ireland are covered by maps showing the extent of urban development in the last decades of the 19th & early 20th century. The plans have been taken from the Ordnance Survey mapping & reprinted at about 15 inches to one mile (1:4, 340). On the reverse most maps have historical notes & many also include extracts from contemporary directories. Most maps cover about one mile (1.6kms) north/south, one & a half miles (2.4kms) across; adjoining sheets can be combined to provide wider coverage.FOR MORE INFORMATION & A COMPLETE LIST OF ALL AVAILABLE TITLES PLEASE CLICK ON THE SERIES LINK. ...

Southeast Asia has always been one of the world's most vital crossroads, a melting-pot of cultures, religions & peoples. It has seen the rise & fall of many mighty empires, whose leaders left behind monumental temples & shrines like the Khmer temples of Angkor in Cambodia, the Javanese Buddhist shrine of Borobudur & the pagodas of Burma. It has been home to great seafaring states like Funan in southern Vietnam & Srivijaya in Sumatra, which one reaped huge profits from trade with China & India. Mary Somers Heidhues guides the reader through the history of Southeast Asia from the earliest prehistoric peoples to the late 20th century
- from the magnificent Dongson bronze drums produced in Vietnam in the first millennium BC to the emergence of high-tech 'tiger' economies, the ongoing struggles towards democracy, & against the environmental threat posed by pollution & deforestation. Packed with informative maps & illustrations, this lively book will appeal to historians, travellers, students & all those interested in discovering more about this fascinating part of the world.

Southeast Asia

The first edition of Southeast Asia: An Introductory History was published in 1979 and immediately filled a need for travellers and students interested in a tantalisingly different part of the world. Subsequent editions (translated into Japanese, Khmer, Korean and Thai) have continued to document with great perception the enormous changes and dramatic growth experienced in the region. Dr Milton Osborne has been a resident, student and fascinated observer of Southeast Asia for over 50 years. This familiarity has resulted in a highly readable and lively chronicle. While giving due regard to the early history of the region, Osborne concentrates on the changes that have taken place since the eighteenth century: the impact of colonial rule, economic transformations of the 19th and 20th
centuries, the emergence and triumph of the independence movements, the impact of social change and the pivotal roles played by religion, ethnic minorities and immigrant groups. He also provides an introduction to the art of the region and a comprehensive guide to literature about Southeast Asia.Clearly written and extensively illustrated, this eleventh edition of Southeast Asia: An Introductory History remains a classic in the field.
