South Africa at 1:1, 000, 000 on a very large road map from the country’s main cartographic publishers Map Studio. The map is double-sided, presenting the country with a good overlap between the sides. Road network is graded into freeways/national roads, main roads & secondary roads, each differentiating between the tarred & untarred sections. Distances are shown on many secondary routes & in the remote areas locations of petrol stations are marked. The map also shows railway lines & local airports & airfields. Plain beige background makes the road network easy to see but at the cost of providing very little topographic information. The map shows rivers & lakes & has graphics for salt pans & marshl&, but altitude is indicated only by marking for mountain passes along the roads (no names of mountain ranges, etc.) – a pity since the map is clearly more suitable for route planning than for use whilst already travelling. National parks & game reserves are prominently highlighted & symbols indicate locations with tourist accommodation & campsites, wineries, diving & whale watching sites, historical locations, etc. Numerous places of interest are marked directly on the map, with more on the surrounding panels, although not always properly cross-referenced on the map itself. The map is indexed. Although the cover describes it as “ Your GPS Companion” there are no latitude or longitude lines or any GPS waypoints directly on the map. ...
