How would Paris look if images from its glorious past were placed side-by-side with photographs of the city today? In Paris: A Journey Through Time, Leonard Pitt does just this.
With a stunning array of archival & contemporary photos he peels away the many layers of old Paris to document the city's transformation with events such as the demolition of a section of rue Beaubourg in 1975 & its eventual reconstruction into modern condos & a shopping center, or the narrow cobblestoned rue du Four becoming the wide, paved street we know today bustling with automobiles & bicycles. Along with these photos from the past & present come detailed maps for walking tours with old schematics & plans for construction that may or may not have been carried out, illustrating the strange ways that a city can develop over hundreds of years.
Painstakingly researched, Paris: A Journey Through Time is a tour through Paris, seen through the lens of photographers who lived during each golden age of demolition & construction, & compiled into one tremendous account of the true hidden Paris.

World Dutch conceptual artist Hans Eijkelboom`s work is very much in line with the deadpan, seemingly mechanistic note-taking of Ed Ruscha & Hans-Peter Feldman. In ” Paris* New York* Shanghai”, Eijkelboom creates a clever & witty comparative study of three major contemporary metropolises, each selected for having been (or promising to be) the cultural capital of its time. Paris during the nineteenth century; New York, the twentieth; & Shanghai, the twenty-first. This uniquely bound three-volume set unfolds to allow the reader not only to view each city individually, but also to compare simultaneously the three photographic studies of each metropolis & its citizens. Expansive cityscapes detailing the quirks of each city & the snapshot-style grids of their inhabitants soon reveal how similar one city is to another today. As Eijkelboom writes, Globalization, combined with the desire of cities for visually spectacular elements, is leading to the appearance everywhere of city centers that look the same & where identical products are sold. ...
