North Frisian Woodlands, east of Leeuwarden in the Netherlands in a series of walking & cycling maps at 1:25, 000 – 1:35, 000, published by Falk BV in cooperation with Staatsbosbeheer – Dutch government’s organization for forestry & the management of nature reserves. Colouring indicates different types of vegetation or terrain: woodl&, pastures, heath or sand dunes. Given the topography of most of the country, the maps have no contour lines. The maps show local hiking trails, indicating their waymarking & include cycle paths & horse riding. Many local crossroads are annotated with the numbers of ANWB signposts & ‘mushrooms’ – a useful aid when navigating in Dutch countryside. Symbols indicate various tourist facilities & places of interest, including different types of accommodation, cafes, windmills, etc. The maps have no geographical coordinates. Topographic survey of Sweden at 1:50, 000, the Terrängkartan, from the Lantmäteriet, covering most of the country in 244 double-sided maps. Please note: the mountainous regions of central & northern Sweden are not covered by this series but presented in a separate “ Fjällkartan
- Mountain Map” series also listed on our website. Each 1:50, 000 topographic survey map covers an area of 37.5 x 40km. The maps have contours at 5 metre intervals, plus relief shading & graphics for rocky outcrops & boulders. Further graphics and/or colouring show different types of land use or vegetation (forests, arable l&, orchards, marshes, peat bogs, etc). An unusual feature of this survey is the colouring indicating buildings below or above two storeys high & “leisure/holiday homes”. The maps indicate privately maintained roads & include all other information expected of topographic survey at this scale. The maps have a 1-km UTM grid, plus latitude & longitude lines 5’ intervals. Four versions of this map have been published, with coverage extending from Acton Lane & Beaconsfield Road eastward to Devonport Road & Tabor Road, & from the Uxbridge Road southward to Hamlet Gardens & the District Line. The 1869 map shows Hammersmith at the edge of suburbia but several brick fields are evidence that building was already underway. Features include Starch Green, Acton Vale, Oldfield House, Stamford Brook, Acton Green, Turnham Green station, Ravenscourt Park, Paddenswick Green. By the time of the 1893 map Starch Green has extended south to join Hammersmith & part of the map is shown as western Shepherds Bush & Bedford Park is being developed. By 1912 most of the map has been built on with just a few streets half built, & the 1935 version completes the picture. Other features on these maps include the NSWJR Hammersmith Branch, Stamford Brook Common, Wendell Park & tramways. The 1869 map
