Sailing is far more fun if you understand what is going on aboard & can give a h&. & if the weather turns nasty, or things go wrong (which is very rare), then an extra hand can be invaluable. This compact companion contains all the essential information that a new crew needs before stepping aboard: what clothes to bring, what the things on the deck are called, how to start helping with the sails & other deckwork. There is also an important section on safety & one on living aboard
- because `boat living` is not at all like living ashore. Ideal for a skipper to give out to new crew, or for a new crew to buy for themselves, to ensure that they know what to expect & get the most out of their first sailing experiences.

The official tie-in to the landmark new series on Radio 4, written & presented by one of the UK`s leading commentators on social & political life
- Jim Naughtie. The perfect read for anyone who wants to gauge the depth & spread of creativity & genius in the British Isles over the past sixty years. To mark the Diamond Jubilee, Radio 4 has looked back over the span of Queen Elizabeth II reign thus far in order to identify & profile the people who have helped to define the era & whose achievements seem likely to stand the test of time. From the broadcaster who brought A History of the World in 100 Objects to the radio, this new programme is a series of documentary profiles which celebrates the sixty New Elizabethans, from all walks of life in British society. It is a major portrait of most of the post-war period, highlighting its most significant figures & the most important areas of achievement in British life. With unique access to the Radio 4 scripts written by James Naughtie, it will be the perfect guide for anyone interested in our recent history, as well as those who wish to continue the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of HM The Queen. Much as Jeremy Clarkson is able to elevate & popularize debate on the latest automobile to hit the British market, so Jim Naughtie`s analysis & unique take on British life will bring this series, & book, to life. As Jim comments: ”I was born just before the Queen`s accession, so this history is mine too. The New Elizabethans have built the country that I live in, given it colour & life &, in part, made us all the people that we are.”

New Eltham in 1895 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. The map centred on the hamlet of New Eltham, formerly known as Pope Street, a community that developed after the arrival of the railway. The station is in the centre, where Southwood Road & Footscray Road cross. Green Lane runs north-south to the west, with the small community of South End at the top. To the east is a cluster of nurseries near Blackboy Wood. When the railway arrived in the 1860s the area did not have enough population for a station but Pope Street (later New Etham) station opened in 1878. Even in 1895 this remains a fairly rural scene. On the reverse are extracts from Walsham Bros New Eltham Directory.
