London with Cycling Routes Wall Map, *in the Emerald/ Silver/ Blue version on paper, * in a series of large, glossy & high quality street plans from the Future Mapping Company, designed to provide an innovative & strikingly beautiful alternative to conventional street mapping whilst at the same time highlighting cycling routes across the capital. The plans very effectively use combinations of colour & graphics to indicate various types of land use & public buildings, e.g. the capital’s green spaces are classified into woodlands, parkland/nature reserve, public/private open spaces, sports grounds, allotments & cemeteries. The street network is overprinted with colours indicating different types of cycle routes: quieter roads recommended by cyclist, sign-posted routes including those on busier roads, provision for cyclists adjacent to busy roads, & restricted pedestrian only streets. Railway lines are included; symbols indicate rail, Underground & DLR stations, with additional signs for stations with special cycle parking facilities. The maps also show both local authority boundaries & the Congestion Zone. The maps are printed on to the highest quality FSC approved silk-coated paper using the lithographic printing process. (This works like a mechanised version of traditional screen printing.) A plate is made for each colour & then laid down individually, creating a stunning print with maximum definition & impact. A sealer is applied to protect the inks & gloss UV varnish used to add contrast & highlight boundaries. The maps are printed on a very high quality, glossy art paper & are published in a choice of two presentations, each also available encapsulated:* Version 1 Aqua/ Champagne/ Apple: in predominantly shades of green & blue* Version 2 Emerald/ Silver/ Blue: in brighter, more primary colours, with sign-posted routes shown in red ...

David Gentleman has been drawing London all his adult life. But can you look afresh at the place where you live? Over the past year he has immersed himself in his home city to try & find out. London, You're Beautiful, the resulting book of sketches, drawings & watercolours, arranged month by month, shows a year in the life of London, & reveals the city that is hidden in plain view. David's notes on his work offer us a privileged insight into how an artist sees & captures the ever-shifting light & colours, movement & figures of a teeming city as it moves through the seasons. He describes how he chooses techniques & materials to render the spellbound children at his grandchildren's Camden primary school; the spectacular transformation of Hendon's streets from brown to pink to green with April's cherry blossom; the strange world evoked by the city under snow. Through David's eyes we see London anew as he shows us how the sun turns rubbish-strewn ditches into enchanting waterside glades, or how just twenty-two lines on paper can deliver the dazzling complexity of Canary Wharf's windows. This book is for everyone who would like to understand how an artist works, for lovers of the Olympic city that will be celebrated in London 2012, & for those who long to see a familiar world, transformed. David Gentleman, born in London in 1930, is a watercolourist & printmaker, working in many media & scales. He has designed British stamps & coins & the platform-length mural at Charing Cross tube station, well-known to Londoners, that is blown up from his wood engravings. His studio is at the top of an early Victorian house in Camden Town between the crowded, rackety Camden Lock & the green spaces of Regent's Park & Primrose Hill. ...

Coffee is one of the world's most important commodities, & London has been at the centre of importing, roasting & selling it for nearly 400 years. The author relates the introduction of coffee houses after the Restoration to today's coffee house chains. In between came the Temperance coffee houses & the rediscovery of coffee in the 1950s' coffee bars when a younger generation took to the taste produced by newly invented commercial espresso machines, The 17th century coffee houses were used as auction rooms, & for business deals, medical treatment & the hiring of servants; these early meeting points were essential to the commercial & political development of London. ...

This fascinating insight into London's docklands is the result of extensive research into an part of London that has intrigued the author for many years. In its heyday, the area was dominated by the Port of London; a sprawling network of quays, ancient wharves, deep canals & high-walled basins that stretched along the river Thames from the City to Tilbury. Two or three generations ago, London Docks provided employment for over 100, 000 men, but the demise of London's docklands in the late 20th century ended a tradition of waterside industry that had existed in London since Roman times. Yet the Docks themselves still stand defiantly; too expensive (and expansive) to be attractive to property developers despite the fact that most are sited in prime real estate areas. For the foreseeable future, the Docks will remain part of London, a visual reminder that for a time, Britannia did indeed rule the waves. This splendid book chronicles the rise & fall of this most under-explored part of historical London by plundering the wealth of evidence left behind by the people who worked, lived & visited the area. From archaeological finds through to diaries, newspaper articles, census returns & personal interviews, the lost docks of London are rediscovered through fascinating tales of Medieval mercers, river pirates, shipbuilders, merchant adventurers, mud larks, Dockers, socialist agitators, brothel keepers & opium eaters to name but a few. London's docklands & its people were hugely influential not only in shaping the commercial destiny of the capital but also the development & social structure of the entire eastern side of the city. At this uncertain & precarious point in their history, it is important that their story is told before all remnants of their illustrious past are erased forever. ...

Every inhabitant of London & its satellites knows of the Underground (Tube) network; most have travelled on the system at least once in their lives. However, fewer are aware of the fascinating, multi-faceted story of the self-contained world constructed beneath London since the mid-Victorian era. This does not only include London Underground but also the forgotten Post Office railway, tunnels for underground rivers & waterways, foot tunnels, vast complexes of sewers & politicians' bunkers
- an entire subterranean world where large numbers of people have spent much of their lives. Following the often pioneering development of these structures, London's Labyrinth explores the visionary, groundbreaking & sometimes dark history of the world beneath London's streets. Following Joseph Bazalgette's construction of one of the first modern sewerage systems during the Victorian age, all manner of fascinating stories emerge. London's Labyrinth also exposes the sinister side of the subterranean city in Victorian times: from the shocking bomb attacks on the Metropolitan & District Lines in 1883 to the sad tale of unrequited love at Charing Cross, where a young man shot the object of his affections before turning the gun on himself. By its very nature, 'underworld' London has also been a popular resort of thieves & the book relates outrageous tales of robberies such as that of the unfortunate William Frost, shot during a mugging on the Metropolitan Line in 1910, & the severely injured robbery victim found wandering along the line between Gower Street & King's Cross in 1888. It has also witnessed some of the worst tragedies in London's history: from the Moorgate tube disaster & the King's Cross fire to mass deaths in underground World War 2 shelters & modern-day terrorist attacks. Such tragic tales are interspersed with the lighter but no less fascinating stories of London's numerous disused railways, its 'ghost stations', tunnels & bunkers. In the 21st century underground London remains an essential part of the capital's life, & this book will enrich any journey (real or imaginary) through the city's subterranean labyrinth, illuminating the lives of all who live in, work in or simply pass through London.
