Disappointed to learn that Hotel California isn`t actually in the phone book, radio producers Chris & Joe resolve to seek out the true spirit of rock & roll America. Roof down & stereo up, they drive coast to coast on a mission to `live the music`. They will sell their souls to the devil on the same crossroads as Robert Johnson, taste the loneliness of the ` Wichita Lineman` (and the fried peanut butter sandwich that finished off The King), hang out with the spirit of Johnny Cash in his own front room &, sitting on a jetty by an alligator-infested lake, sing ` Happy Birthday` to country-rock musician Gram Parsons. But first they must learn the ukulele, grow preposterous facial hair & fail to get into the Chateau Marmont with a rising popstar
- & that`s just day one. It`s a tale of friendship tested to the limit, great melodies, perfect lyrics & noble myths.

In LIVE TO RIDE, the extraordinary writing of Wayne Johnson makes readers feel like participants, not just observers: whether it's roaring down an empty highway at an insane speed on two wheels, hopping on for a few mindboggling loops of motocross, or joining in the rolling thunder of a veritable outlaw motorcycle club, Wayne has done it all himself & brings us along for the ride. As he says, Here you are in it, this landscape, not just passing through. This book is all about the adventure of riding as well as the colorful groups & fascinating that history that goes along with it. Some topics covered include: the history of the motorcycle, beginning more than a hundred years ago when it evolved from the bicycle; what it means to ride a Ducati vs. BMW; inside looks at diverse racing venues like the vertigo-inspiring Widowmaker Hillclimb & the fastest land racing in the world at the Bonneville Salt Flats; & what biker clubs are, with first hand accounts of Wayne's own wild rides with an outlaw club.LIVE TO RIDE is sure to touch many kinds of readers: those who have ever wondered what it's like to hop on a motorcycle; those who have actually done it & felt the rush of pleasure that goes along with zooming off; or those who just like to read about people having wild, life-expanding adventures; & finally the many readers intrigued by this fascinating, important part of modern American culture. ...

A detailed topographic map from the Ordnance Survey Explorer series, covering St Helens, Widnes & Runcorn. Edition A2; Publication date August 2011 About this series: These highly detailed maps show all the administrative boundaries, settlements as small as isolated farms, the road network down to unfenced roads & country tracks, & field boundaries (hedges & drystone walls) which make navigation across the countryside much easier. Steep gradients on roads are indicated. Various landmarks, e.g. powerlines, archaeological sites, windmills, churches & lighthouses are shown & additional graphics indicate natural terrain features such as cliffs, scree, mud & vegetation variations. The contour interval is 5 metres in the lower parts of the country & 10 metres in the uplands, & spot heights are marked. Each map covers an area of 30 x 20km (i.e. approx. 19 x 12 miles), with some double-sided maps covering more, as indicated in the individual descriptions. The maps are fully GPS compatible, with the National Grid shown at 1km intervals & latitude & longitude indicated by margin ticks at 1'. The Explorer series has replaced the earlier, green-cover Pathfinder maps. The Explorer series is now complete & covers all of Engl&, Wales & Scotl&. Some sheets for popular areas like the National Parks are still branded as Outdoor Leisure (OL) maps, but are now included in this series as the cartography is the same as that in the Explorer Maps. The Explorer maps offer a substantial improvement on the Pathfinder series, with greater use of colour, larger area per map, & stronger emphasis on information for ramblers & tourists. This series is ideal for walking & other outdoor pursuits & each map shows a large amount of information for ramblers & tourists. Public rights of way are shown (except in Scotland), together with other routes with public access: National Trails & Recreational Paths, permitted paths & bridleways, & selected cycle routes. Boasting perhaps the most spectacular setting of any city in Britain, & at one time second only to London as the great port of Europe & transatlantic trade, Liverpool was a won the competition to become European Capital of Culture in 2008. This book is an unashamed visual celebration of the finest of the city's architectural & cultural heritage, by one of Britain's leading photographers. Ranging from the distinguished elegance of Wood's 18th-century town hall & the numerous classical terraces still to be found around the University, to the spectacular & unprecedented originality of Elmes St Georges Hall, which forms a kind of cultural foil to the colossal & magnificent contemporary commercial Albert Docks of Jesse Hartley, the book culminates with the 20th century's ' Three Graces' at the Pierhead, & the two sensational cathedrals. & in amongst the architectural splendour, the spirit of the ordinary Liverpudlian is also captured. ...
