Ellis (d.1796) was a prolific English engraver of the late eighteenth century who joined with William Palmer to produce a set of English county maps, published in Ellis' New English Atlas, in 1765. John Cary was a renowned & active map engraver & publisher, working between 1787 & 1834 in London. Cary was apprenticed to William Palmer, a noted engraver, in 1770 & soon gained a reputation as a maker of globes, both terrestrial & celestial, becoming the foremost globe-maker of his day. However, he is perhaps best known for the atlases that he went on to engrave & publish.
