The great Austrian writer Stefan Zweig was a master anatomist of the deceitful heart, & Impatience of the Heart, the only novel he published during his lifetime, uncovers the seed of selfishness within even the finest of feelings. Hofmiller, an Austro-Hungarian cavalry officer stationed at the edge of the empire, is invited to a party at the home of a rich local landowner, a world away from the dreary routine of the barracks. The surroundings are glamorous, wine flows freely, & the exhilarated young Hofmiller asks his host`s lovely daughter for a dance, only to discover that sickness has left her painfully crippled. It is a minor blunder that will destroy his life, as pity & guilt gradually implicate him in a well-meaning but tragically wrongheaded plot to restore the unhappy invalid to health. ...

As Benjamin Franklin famously put it, Americans have a republic, if we can keep it. Preserving the Constitution & the democratic system it supports is the public`s responsibility. One route the Constitution provides for discharging that duty-a route rarely traveled-is impeachment. Cass R. Sunstein provides a succinct citizens` guide to an essential tool of self-government. He illuminates the constitutional design behind impeachment & emphasizes the people`s role in holding presidents accountable. Despite intense interest in the subject, impeachment is widely misunderstood. Sunstein identifies & corrects a number of misconceptions. For example, he shows that the Constitution, not the House of Representatives, establishes grounds for impeachment, & that the president can be impeached for abuses of power that do not violate the law. Even neglect of duty counts among the ”high crimes & misdemeanors” delineated in the republic`s foundational document. Sunstein describes how impeachment helps make sense of our constitutional order, particularly the framers` controversial decision to install an empowered executive in a nation deeply fearful of kings. With an eye toward the past & the future, Impeachment: A Citizen`s Guide considers a host of actual & imaginable arguments for a president`s removal, explaining why some cases are easy & others hard, why some arguments for impeachment have been judicious & others not. In direct & approachable terms, it dispels the fog surrounding impeachment so that Americans of all political convictions may use their ultimate civic authority wisely. ...

From inside a surreal bubble of pure Americana known as the Green Zone, the US-led Coalition Provisional Authority attempted to rule Iraq following the fall of Saddam Hussein`s regime. Drawing on interviews & internal documents, Rajiv Chandrasekaran tells the memorable story of this ill-prepared attempt to build American democracy in a war-torn Middle Eastern country, detailing not only the risky disbanding of the Iraqi army & the ludicrous attempt to train the new police force, but absurdities such as the aide who based Baghdad`s new traffic laws on those of the state of Maryl&, downloaded from the net, & the twenty-four-year-old who had never worked in finance put in charge of revitalising Baghdad`s stock exchange. ” Imperial Life in the Emerald City” is American reportage at its best. ...

The story of Spain`s rise to greatness from its humble beginnings as one of the poorest & most marginal of European countries is a remarkable & dramatic one. With the marriage of Ferdinand & Isabella, the final expulsion of the Moslems & the discovery of America, Spain took on a seemingly unstoppable dynamism that made it into the world`s first global power. This amazing success however created many powerful enemies & Elliott`s famous book charts the dramatic fall of Habsburg Spain with the same elan as it charts the rise. ...

Imperia Province

Imperia Province in a series of handy size road maps from Litografia Artistica Cartografica (LAC) with more minor local roads and tracks than can be found on most regional maps. The series is gradually being changed to a new style of digitally derived cartography, so presentation of adjoining titles may vary. All the maps have hill shading to represent the general relief with spot heights for selected peaks, and show a few more local roads and rough tracks than the other road map series. Intermediate road distances are indicated. Regional, provincial and communal borders are marked, and railways, funiculars, airports, sea ferry links and campsites are shown. The legend is in Italian only. The new, digitally produced editions are indexed and have improved, more finely drawn
cartography: the hill-shading is less bold, motorway service areas are marked, natural parks are highlighted and an expanded range of symbols indicates various landmarks and sites, e.g. antiquities, churches, etc. Two styles of the new cartography are produced, differing only in the colour of the predominant background shading: grey or yellow/green. Some of the new editions include geographical coordinates for the map corners. The index of localities is on the reverse. This title is still produced in the traditional cartographic style.
