- the greatest of all goals for thousands of pilgrims in Europe during the Middle Ages. The map was prepared by the IGN & the Association de Coopération Interrégionale “ Les chemins de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle”. The routes are clearly marked on a base which uses IGN’s general road map of the country. The overprint differentiates between main & alternative pilgrimage routes, & indicates principal starting points such as Vézeley, Le Puy or Arles, as well as important crossroads. Colour-coded symbols, cross-referenced to lists provided in the accompanying information, mark locations of various churches & other cultural heritage linked to the Compostela theme, including UNESCO World Heritage sites, places mentioned by Aymeri Picaud in the 12th century, etc. Map legend for the road map & the overprint
