A cloth-backed reproduction (medium size) of a map of France published around 1818 by James Wyld, with colouring showing the division of the country into provinces which by then were already abolished in 1790 (reinstated during the Bourbon Restoration???) & replaced by the more familiar département system. The map will appeal to any visitors to France who may be puzzled by the still frequently used names such as Artois, Daufiné, Guienne, Saintonge, etc. In some cases modern regions or départements share names with the historic provinces & their borders cover roughly the same territory. The provinces are presented in different colours, with the network of rivers, graphics showing main mountain ranges, & road connections. Latitude & longitude lines are drawn at 1° intervals. The Bay of Biscay is annotated “called by the French Gulf of Gascony” (English Channel & the Straights of Dover do not get the same generous treatment!); Corsica is not included (Bourbons again?); another interesting feature is the linear scale of the map shown as: Common French Leagues 25 to a degree, Great French Leagues 20 to a degree, plus English Statute Miles 69½ to a degree. This reproduction was taken from what used to be called a “cloth-dissected” map, made when the map itself was cut into sections & each section then individually pasted onto an overall cloth backing for the whole map. In this version the whole map is backed onto cloth in one piece but the gaps between the sections have been reproduced in the printing to preserve the style & the feeling of the original. Compared with Michelin’s general coverage of France at 1M, these 500K maps show substantially more names of smaller towns & villages & more local roads, but they do not indicate locations with entries in Michelin’s Green Guides to French regions. When compared with Michelin’s 200K series, coverage by the 500K maps is less detailed, with fewer locations & local roads, particularly in the built-up areas. Presentation of the road network is also less detailed in indicating details such as road widths, driving distances, steeps gradients, load limits on bridges, etc. The 500K maps do show toll routes, full & partial interchanges, motorway services & rest areas, & highlight scenic routes. Enlargements & city centre street plans cover Paris, Bordeaux, Lille, Lyon, Marseilles, Nantes & Toulouse. The mapping of France at 1:200, 000 used by Michelin in their other road atlases has been reduced here to 1:250, 000 & shows fewer villages & small local roads, but still presents the road network in considerable detail. Roads are graded according to their width.
