Essays in Love will appeal to anyone who has ever been in a relationship or confused about love. The book charts the progress of a love affair from the first kiss to argument & reconciliation, from intimacy & tenderness to the onset of anxiety & heartbreak. The work's genius lies in the way it minutely analyses emotions we've all felt before but have perhaps never understood so well: it

Includes::
a chapter on the anxieties of when & how to say 'I love you' & another on the challenges of disagreeing with someone else's taste in shoes. While gripping the reader with the talent of a great novelist, de Botton brings a philosopher's sensibility to his analyses of the emotions of love, resulting in a genre-breaking book that is at once touching & thought-provoking. ' The book's success has much to do with its beautifully modelled sentences, its wry humour & its unwavering deadpan respect for its reader's intelligence.. .full of keen observation & flashes of genuine lyricism, acuity & depth.' Francine Prose, New Republic ' Witty, funny, sophisticated, neatly tied up, & full of wise & illuminating insights.' P. J. Kavanagh, Spectator ' De Botton is a national treasure.' Susan Hill 'I doubt if de Botton has written a dull sentence in his life.' Essen in 1944 in the Alan Godfrey series of reproductions of British War Office survey maps first published in 1945 prior to the Allied occupation of the area. The map is dominated by the city of Essen, a small medieval walled city that developed into an industrial powerbase with the growth of the Krupp works in the 19th century. The Krupp works are inevitably a major feature, close to the city centre, but the map also shows many railways & collieries, providing a fascinating picture for all interested in the industrial development of the Ruhrgebiet. Other areas shown include Steele (a separate town until 1929), Stoppenberg, Frillendorf, Kray, Schonnebeck, Hinsel, Huttrop, Bergerhausen, Altenhof Estate, Rüttenscheid, Rellinghausen, Altendorf, Schönebeck, Fulerum, Frohnhausen, the charming Margaretenhöhe Estate, Altendorf, Borbeck, southern part of the Zollverein Mine (now a World Heritage site), Friedrich Ernestine Mine, Königin Elisabeth Mine, hutted camps, tramways, loco depot, marshalling yards, Altenessen station etc. By 1944, of course, Essen lay in ruins following incessant British bombing raids, but this map shows all the industry before this devastation. To see other titles in this series please click on the series link. This series of reproductions from Alan Godfrey covers the major industrial area east of the Rhine that

Includes::
Bochum, Cologne, Dortmund, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Oberhausen & other towns, with their great network of railways & industries. The maps are taken from the British War Office 1:12, 500 plans & reduced at Approx. 1:19, 000. Published in 1945, prior to the Allied occupation of the area, the maps are especially good at showing industry, collieries & transport. They are not bombing maps
- indeed, they make clear that allowance is not made for bomb damage
- but show the areas with all their industrial sites & railways largely as they were before the bombing raids of 1943-44. The maps have additional information added by British intelligence. This is normally accurate but allowance must be made for the `fog of war` & occasional spelling mistakes, etc. Each title has on the reverse a specially written introduction to the area in English, with a shorter text in German. Map legend is in English only.
