the east coast of Irel&. A lovely drawing in the corner of the map shows Britannia looking approvingly at the map’s original publishers, William Darton & Son. This reproduction was taken from what used to be called a “cloth-dissected” map, made when the map itself was cut into sections & each section then individually pasted onto an overall cloth backing for the whole map. In this version the whole map is backed onto cloth in one piece but the gaps between the sections have been reproduced in the printing to preserve the style & the feeling of the original. Each individual cloth-backed map is sold folded in a colourful case covered with a unique design marbled paper – no two cases are identical.PLEASE NOTE: to see the list of all the titles in this series from the Old Folding Maps please click on the series link.

Originally titled A delineation of the Strata of England & Wales, with part of Scotland; exhibiting the collieries & mines, the marshes & fen lands originally overflowed by the sea & the varieties of soil according to the variations in the substrata, illustrated by the most descriptive names. This is a reproduction of William Smith's 1815 map, the culmination of his 20-year, single-handed effort in determining the geology of Britain. This map was never published as a single sheet. The large size of the original map & the size of the printing presses in the early 19th century meant that it had to be published in fifteen sections. At its original scale of five miles to the inch, the map would have been eight feet long by six feet wide if it had ever been published as a single sheet. This reproduction is published at half scale: ten miles to the inch, & is colour-matched to the original. This is a fine testimony to the groundbreaking work of Smith which helped to shape the economic & scientific development of Britain, just as the country was experiencing the Industrial Revolution & shaping international events on the world stage. ...
