Dubai & the rest of the United Arab Emirates is an extraordinary mixture of ancient Arabic culture & modern Western capitalism. The most opulent hotels in the world fight for attention with open tracts of desert that stretch, uninhabited, to the horizon. Hundreds of kilometres of sandy beaches, which run into the warm & clear waters of the Arabian Gulf, are only interrupted by desalination plants that create enough fresh water to keep acres of Dubai public gardens in luscious bloom. No expense has been spared to make Dubai a five-star paradise for up-market tourists looking for great food & drink, extraordinary duty free shopping, & all-year round sunshine. The Dubai city guide

Today, Dubai is a city of shimmering skyscrapers attracting thousands of tourists every year. Yet just sixty years ago Dubai's population scraped a living by picking dates, diving for pearls, or sailing in wooden dhows to trade with Iran & India. Dubai is everything the rest of the Arab world is not. Until recently it was the fastest-growing city in the world, with an economy whose growth outpaced China's while luring more tourists than all of India. The city has become a metaphor for the lush life, where the wealthy mingle in gilded splendour & luxury cars fill the streets, yet it is also beset by a backwash of bad design, environmental degradation & controversial labour practices. Dubai tells its unique story. ...

Edward Rutherfurd`s great Irish epic reveals the story of the people of Ireland through the focal point of the island`s capital city. The epic begins in pre-Christian Ireland during the reign of the fierce & powerful High Kings at Tara, with the tale of two lovers, the princely Conall & the ravishing Deirdre, whose travails echo the ancient Celtic legend of Cuchulainn. From this stirring beginning, Rutherfurd takes the reader on a graphically realised journey through the centuries. Through the interlocking stories of a powerfully-imagined cast of characters
- druids & chieftains, monks & smugglers, merchants & mercenaries, noblewomen, rebels & cowards
- we see Ireland through the lens of its greatest city.
