Ernesto ” Che” Guevara twice travelled across Latin America in the early 1950s. Based on his accounts of those trips (published in English as The Motorcycle Diaries & Back on the Road), as well as other historical sources, Che`s Travels follows Guevara, country by country, from his native Argentina through Chile, Peru, Colombia, & Venezuela, & then from Argentina through Bolivia, Peru, Guatemala, & Mexico. Each essay is focused on a single country & written by an expert in its history. Taken together, the essays shed new light on Che`s formative years by analyzing the distinctive societies, histories, politics, & cultures he encountered on these two trips, the ways they affected him, & the ways he represented them in his travelogues. In addition to offering new insights into Guevara, the essays provide a fresh perspective on Latin America`s experience of the Cold War & the interplay of nationalism & anti-imperialism in the crucial but relatively understudied 1950s. Chhattisgarh in a series of locally produced administrative maps of Indian states, each with a booklet providing a guide to the area. The maps show the division of each state into districts & have more small towns & villages than on more general maps of India available from other publishers. Presentation is now considerably enhanced with the districts shown in different colours. The maps indicate each district’s administrative capital & also show which towns or villages are headquarters of the tehsil (or tahsil, tahasil, taluka, taluk, taluq) administrative units. Road network distinguishes between national highways, state highways, major roads & other local roads. Intermediate driving distances are given on some routes & most titles include a distance table. Railway lines are also marked &, on some titles, various places of interest. No information on topography or geographical coordinates are provided. Each map comes with a booklet attached to its cover, which contains a guide to the state &, in some titles, an index of place names. Includes:: an index of localities, street plans of main cities, a distance table & a route planner map of the whole of India. Each title comes with a small booklet with brief descriptions of main places of interest & colour photos. The maps show road & rail networks, indicating intermediate distances on many local roads. Towns & villages of particular tourist interest are highlighted & symbols mark national parks & wildlife sanctuaries, temples, etc. The base map shows rivers, lakes & local waterways system & has spot heights for peaks, but the range of elevation colouring is too finely graded to provide any useful information. No geographical coordinates are marked. The maps show the names & boundaries of local districts, indicating state capitals & district or tehsil administrative headquarters. Outside the state boundaries the colour range of the print is reduced, so only main roads are clearly visible. Please note: the various series of state maps of India often show different small villages, supplementing each other to provide a more detailed picture of each state. In this title: there are no street plans. Relief coloring, derived from satellite imagery, provides a very effective representation of the topography.

Chhedhul Gumba, sheet no. 2883-01, in the topographic survey of Nepal at 1:50, 000 published by the Nepali Government in the late 1990s & early 2000s & produced from remote sensing data by Finnish cartographers as part of that country’s international aid program. The maps cover 15’ x 15’ quadrangles.IMPORTANT – PLEASE NOTE BEFORE ORDERING: AVAILABILITY: although, theoretically at least, still in print, these maps are very difficult to get locally in Nepal and/or from various suppliers elsewhere specializing in obtaining such maps. DELIVERIES MAY TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS OR EVEN MONTHS.PROBLEMS WITH PLACE NAMES: reports from previous users indicate that transliteration of place names differs from that used widely not only on other maps & in guide books but also on the ground itself, in road signs & in the tourist & trekking industry in general. Whilst most names are similar enough to be easily recognizable, e.g. Namche Bajar for Namche Bazar or Lantan for Langtang, we have been told of confusion & difficulties arising from different spellings appearing on these maps.TREKKING ROUTES & TOURIST INFORMATION: whilst the maps show foot trails & mark locations of temples, etc, they carry no specific trekking information. Major trekking routes & places of interest are not highlighted. There is no marking for base camps & other tourist facilities. Map specifications: Contours are at 40m intervals, with graphics and/or coloring to show various features of the terrain (glaciers with moraines & crevasses, quarries, gravel or clay pits, etc.) & vegetation (forests, bush, grass, orchards & plantations, etc). Additional comments such as “open mixed forest mainly bajh & pine” annotate many area. The maps have numerous spot heights, but relatively few peaks are named. Areas outside the country’s borders are left blank. Settlements in remote areas are indicated by markings for individual buildings & the placing of names does not always make it clear which group of buildings they refer to. Road network distinguishes between major & minor foot trails. Symbols mark features such as temples, schools & hospitals, police stations, etc. Also shown are the country’s administrative divisions. The maps have a 1-km UTM grid, plus latitude & longitude lines at intervals of 5’. Map legend & all the text is in English. Coverage: the whole country is now covered, with the north at 1:50, 000, plus central & southern Nepal at 1:25, 000. The two series are complementary, do not overlap & use the same grid & numbering system (apart from the Lumbini Zone, where a different grid & numbering are used).
