There are three routes one can follow on an overland expedition from Europe to Cape Town (or the reverse). Last year, ITMB published the eastern route, via Cairo & Sudan to Ethiopia & Kenya. This year, we are pleased to announce the publication of a more practical route to follow, via Tangier, Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Mali & Ghana, through the Congo to Uganda, & then south over a variety of options to Namibia & South Africa. The advantage of this route is that it avoids the conflict-ridden countries closest to infection from the extremist Islam movement. It also avoids the current difficulties of the central route through Algeria (the Hoggar route) & Niger. As the first volume focused on the eastern routes (Africa Overland), this volume focuses more on westerly routes. In addition to providing route maps through all the countries involved (shown on the back cover of the book), 43 full-page maps of cities along the route are included, such as Casablanca, Nouakchott, Banjul, Bobo Diolasso, Lome, Douala, Kigali, Abuja, Livingstone & other cities never before included in a travel atlas of Africa. ...

Western Africa at 1:3, 400, 000 on an indexed, double-sided map from ITMB providing coverage of the whole of Benin, Burkina Faso, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauretania, Morocco, Senegal, Sierra Leone & Togo, plus most of Algeria & the western parts of Niger & Nigeria. Map No. L-1 in the ONC series: military topographic survey mapping covering the world's land masses & significant islands at 1:1, 000, 000. The maps are useful as general topographical coverage where nothing else is available, although they are designed primarily as flying charts for military aircraft. ONC stands for Operational Navigation Chart. Relief is portrayed by a combination of contours (basic interval 1000ft, intermediate contours shown where appropriate), elevation tinting & relief shading, plus spot heights. Towns, villages, major roads, railways & airports are shown but please note that many of the smaller settlements are not named & the road information is not necessarily up to date, as compilation & revision dates vary. Some air navigation information also appears on the map, such as radio beacons & restricted flying zones.
