The definitive biography of the world`s most important body of water -- the Atlantic. One hundred & ninety million years ago, the shifting of two of the world`s tectonic plates led to the creation of an immense chasm. This giant gash in the flanks of the planet slowly opened up & eventually evolved into the most important & most travelled ocean in our world. In this utterly original biography, Simon Winchester explores the life of the Atlantic; it`s birth, its relationship with mankind, & what lies in store for it once man has left the stage. He charts the development of the first settlements by the Oceanside -- the communities of Celts & Vikings & whose lives depended on the sea -- & delves into the age of exploration, venturing to forgotten worlds. The building of some of the world`s most beautiful port cities -- London, Rio de Janeiro, New York, Casablanca -- is also examined, along with the creation of settlements & colonies in & around the sea. Completely unique & highly readable, Atlantic takes its reader on a wonderful journey through time, along the waves of our planet`s most significant ocean. ...

The incredible story of the legendary 1905 international yacht race for supremacy on the high seas. Outstanding. Cookman is equally adept at depicting the gut-wrenching tension of ocean racing, the politics, intrigues, skullduggery of billionaires, society snobs, & sailors who make Captain Ahab seem the model of restraint, & a gilded, vanished era under the gathering storm clouds of war.
- Neil Hanson, author of The Custom of the Sea. It was the last & greatest yacht race of a gilded age: the emperor of Germany, two British lords, & eight American billionaires racing 3, 000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean to win a solid-gold trophy cup. In eleven of the fastest, most opulent yachts ever built, they battled fog, icebergs, gales, & each other to set an ocean racing record that has yet to be broken. Atlantic is the story of the men, ships, dangers, international intrigue & triumph of the 1905 Kaiser's Cup transatlantic race
- & foreshadows the events that would put an end to almost all of those who sailed in it. This dazzling account of a great American yachting victory also illuminates the lavishness of the privileged lives of the last of world's gilded princes
- the final gasp of an era that would disappear forever with the coming of World War I & the stock market crash. Scott Cookman (Atlanta, GA), a nonfiction writer, is the author of Ice Blink: The Tragic Fate of Sir John Franklin's Lost Polar Expedition. His magazine features appear frequently in Field & Stream, & he has also written for Army & Civil War Times. His Man & Mission videos, chronicling America's Mercury 7 astronauts, are a primary attraction at the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame.

Atlantic Affair consists of three parts. Part One is a description of Otway Waller`s single-handed voyage made in 1930 following the route of his friend & gun-runner Conor O` Brien`s circumnavigation, in which he demonstrated the value of the self-steering system he invented, the first to enable a yacht to run unattended before the wind. It introduces the reader to a brave man, whose journey would fulfill many landlubber dreams today. It also explains the final & shocking cause of the break-up of Otway`s marriage. At the end of Part One, Otway, who is seriously ill with a divorce pending, decides to return to Ireland to face his wife Muriel & his son Peter. This is dealt with in Part Three. To understand these three characters, we need to go back to Otway`s & Muriel`s courting & Peter`s childhood. Who better to tell this story than Peter? He wrote an autobiographical manuscript, the second half of which became Irish Flames
- Peter Waller`s true story of the arrival of the Black & Tans. Part Two of Atlantic Affair incorporates even more of Peter`s manuscript. The final third of the book follows directly on from Part One. In 1930 Otway is in the Canary Islands suffering from Canary Fever. He decides to postpone his voyage on the Imogen & return to Irel&. With his marriage to Muriel over, he finds a new companion who becomes his second wife. His departure from Ireland is traumatic & his new life in England is a mixture of happiness raising a new family & stress as he moves towards bankruptcy.
