From the Iguazu Falls to Tierra del Fuego, from the boundless pampas to the rivers of Mesopotamia, Argentina is full of surprises. A young l&, it has lost none of its taste for adventure & discovery. Buenos Aires is the most European capital in South America, symbolizing great expectations & profound change. Its people, the product of mass, disorganized immigration, found fresh enthusiasm, becoming masters of their own fate & fortune. Argentina is amazing peaks, crystal-clear lakes, forests of larch & monkey-puzzle trees, eternal glaciers: nature, proud & solitary, is still only partially tamed by man. Oceans, beaches, rivers, prairies & plains in abundance, inhabited by cattle, horses & sheep, as well as such animals as the nandu, penguin, elephant seal, condor, guanaco & deer. What remains of the ancient pre-colonial civilizations merges with the distant echoes of Art Nouveau or Deco, & the ruins of the Jesuit missions stand alongside baroque Spanish churches. Descendants of the gauchos still ride across immense plains, home to prosperous estancias that bear the curse of solitude; the legendary herdsmen & the melancholic, unsettling national dance, the tango, are the soul of this strong & generous country that continues to ask itself questions & to dream of a future of boundless promise. ...

This book originated with Charmain Bibby OCC who offered notes of her 2003 cruise of Argentina to the Pilotage Foundation. This formed the first edition of a web pilot & augmented the earlier hard copy books of the South Atlantic Circuit & Havens & Anchorages published under the Pilotage Foundation. This current edition contains considerably more information, especially in southern Patagonia, & builds upon the original notes with the addition of information gathered by co-ordinating author Andy O’ Grady, Ulla Norlander & Pete Hill. They have written this work to help those who follow in their wake & the Pilotage Foundation is grateful for their selfless contribution & attention to detail. Without it, publications of this type could not take place. This new book would not have happened without the initiative & lead authorship of Andy O’ Grady. Magellan’s Strait divides Patagonia from Tierra del Fuego. Sailors considering entering the Strait should refer to Chapter 8 of Andy O’ Grady’s book Chile (RCCPF/ Imray) but should also be aware of the author’s comments at the start of chapter 6 to this book. ...
